Almost every history book will tell you Memorial Day was invented in Waterloo, New York, in 1866 by Northern generals and grieving white folks.
But that’s a campaign of misinformation. The real origin of Memorial Day was deliberately whitewashed because the truth was too Black, and too close to the brutality of slavery. It wasn’t created by a government mandate. It was invented by newly freed Black folks in Charleston, South Carolina, before the Civil War was even completely over.
In May 1865, 10,000 newly freed Black Americans marched onto a former Confederate prison camp to honor 257 Union soldiers thrown into a mass grave. They spent weeks digging them up, giving them a proper burial, and covering the new cemetery in roses. They painted a sign over the gate honoring the dead reading “Martyrs of the Race Course.”
