Meet Harvey — Atlantic Edge’s Running & Diving Coach
If Harvey isn’t underwater, there’s a pretty good chance he’s running, swimming, kayaking, training for a triathlon, tinkering with his 1955 Chevy pickup—or brewing something in the garage.
Harvey’s diving story began in 1983 while attending Hampden-Sydney College. After graduating in 1986, his dive gear took an extended surface interval until his honeymoon in 1994. That trip got him back underwater, and he hasn’t stopped diving since!
Today, Harvey is an Atlantic Edge Scuba Divemaster who especially enjoys working with newer divers. One of his favorite parts of diving is watching students go from a little nervous to completely excited about being underwater.
“Seeing the excitement of new divers never gets old.”
From Oysters to Sea Lions
Harvey’s logbook has a little bit of everything. His favorite adventures include diving Nassau in the Bahamas, harvesting oysters in the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay, exploring the Horse Ferry wreck in Lake Champlain, swimming with turtles in Lahaina, hanging out with sea lions at La Jolla Cove, and diving the Vandenberg in Key West.
He also has a soft spot for aquarium diving. Two favorites are EPCOT and the National Aquarium, where he enjoys visiting what he affectionately calls “my fish.”
But for Harvey, the people are every bit as important as the dive site. He loves diving with friends and meeting new people on dive boats, but some of his best dives are with his son, daughter, and son-in-law.
Running Shoes Meet Dive Fins
Harvey doesn't exactly sit still when he's above water.
He has completed the Marine Corps Marathon three times and now runs distances from 5Ks through half marathons. He’s also a certified running coach and volunteers with the Montgomery County Road Runners Club. These days, he enjoys running half marathons with his son, who has the ambitious goal of completing one in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.
And apparently running isn't enough cardio.
Harvey grew up as a competitive age-group swimmer and now participates in open-water swims from one to 3.1 miles, recently completing a 2.5-mile ocean swim in Cape May. Add sprint and Olympic-distance triathlons and kayaking, and the nickname “Atlantic Edge’s Running & Diving Coach” starts to make a lot of sense.
When he finally slows down, Harvey enjoys driving and showing his 1955 Chevrolet pickup and homebrewing b**r, kombucha, and other fermented creations.
What's Next?
There are still plenty of blank pages in Harvey's dive log. Iceland, North Carolina, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Pacific Northwest are all waiting on his bucket list.
At home, life includes two rescue dogs—a beagle and an American Staffordshire Terrier—a rescue cat, and, appropriately enough, fish. Harvey is also an Eagle Scout and has called the DMV home since 1973.
During the workweek, Harvey trades his regulator for spreadsheets as a Commercial Credit Underwriter at EagleBank, where he has worked for 10 years after previous positions with TD Bank, Chevy Chase Bank, and Sovran.
Whether he’s coaching someone through their first dive, crossing another finish line, swimming a few miles in open water, or heading out on a dive boat with family and friends, Harvey seems to follow one simple philosophy:
Keep moving, keep exploring—and never turn down a good dive!
