Remember this? Well here we go again…
Local Matters… Until It Doesn’t
For years, local businesses have supported Gardendale schools.
They bought yearbook ads. Sponsored teams. Donated to booster clubs. Helped coaches when budgets were tight. They sat in the same bleachers as the parents and cheered for the same kids.
One of those businesses has been Mordecai Sporting Goods.
When schools needed uniforms, equipment, spirit wear, or a last-minute order, they showed up. Not because they had a national sales team, but because they were part of the community.
Last year, many parents questioned why Gardendale High School moved its business to a national company despite concerns about higher costs and the impact on local families.
Now Bragg Middle School appears to have followed the same path.
What’s different this time is that there reportedly wasn’t even a bid process.
No competing quotes.
No opportunity for local businesses to compete.
Just a decision.
And that’s where parents should start asking questions.
Because too often in school athletics, decisions aren’t made based on what costs parents the least. They’re made based on what appears easiest for coaches and programs. National vendors frequently offer credits, incentives, and perks to athletic programs, while the actual costs are pushed downstream to the families buying the gear.
The coach sees credits.
The parents see invoices.
The program gets perks.
The family gets another bill.
And nobody seems to ask whether the mom working overtime to keep little Johnny in football and baseball can afford one more expense.
Nobody seems to ask whether the local business owner who has sponsored teams, bought ads, donated money, and supported the schools for years deserves a chance to compete.
That’s what frustrates people.
Nobody expects a local business to win every time.
But they should at least get an opportunity.
Because “support local” shouldn’t only apply when businesses are writing sponsorship checks.
It should matter when decisions are being made too.
Otherwise, let’s be honest: local matters right up until somebody else is spending the parents’ money.
