It has been a whirlwind spring for Bishop Noll Institute senior Akinjide Olaoye. Between leading the boys’ volleyball team as co-captain, earning the title of prom king, and preparing for his upcoming transition to Purdue University, his schedule has been packed.
Yet, thanks to his hard work over the past several years and a prestigious full housing and tuition scholarship, the financial burden of college is one thing he does not have to worry about.
Olaoye was a recipient of the coveted Chick Evans Scholarship for caddies, which covers both tuition and housing.
“To me, to have earned the scholarship means that I have not only been awarded a very prestigious award, but been given the gracious opportunity to learn, explore and grow my passions in college while having the privilege to not worry about financial aid,” Olaoye said.
Olaoye’s journey to the golf course began under the guidance of his three older siblings: Anyah Akanni, Michael Akanni ’19, and Kayode Olaoye ’22.
“They provided me with building blocks and knowledge of the job and what my future as a caddie would look like if I stayed consistent, disciplined, confident and patient,” he said. “One of the best experiences on my golf course is caddying in our annual invitational tournament event with my two brothers.”
The senior admits that caddying did not always come naturally.
“My advice would be to be open minded as you think about caddying or begin your caddying journey,” Olaoye said. “My first years were difficult, but I learned to prosper and grow over time, honing in on my skills and eventually mentoring others..”
Olaoye will soon take those mentorship skills to West Lafayette, where he will study biomedical health sciences at Purdue University. As part of the scholarship program, he will reside in the dedicated Evans Scholars House on campus.
“Attending university as an Evans Scholar, I'm most looking forward to meeting a larger spectrum of people and learning more about people who come from backgrounds similar to mine,” Olaoye said.
At Purdue, Olaoye plans to pursue a career dedicated to helping others, with the goal to work in pediatric care “where I believe my God-given gifts are needed most,” he said. “I see my college education helping me achieve these goals by providing the right classes and skills needed to achieve excellence in my field.”
Olaoye has also pushed his limits on the court this year.
“Volleyball challenged me the most physically because it required not only physical strength, but skill, consistency and flexibility,” Olaoye said. “As captain I learned the difference between leading as both a friend and a teammate, learning the places where either one would be needed most, ensuring awareness, competency, and overall team success.”
