: Summit School/Bluff Park School

On May 12, 1898, Mr. and Mrs. Dison donated some property to the Bluff Park community. According to historians, this acre of ground was located “at the corner of Valley Street and Tyler Road”. Looking at the deed, you can see they donated the land for the purpose of building a church and a school building. At the time, this particular area was known as “Summit”.

The original building was 20 feet wide by 24 feet long. A side room was added in 1912. School was held during the week, church on Sunday, and was also used as a community house. Because of the tremendous growth the area began to experience, the school was moved to 569 Park Avenue in 1923-24. The name was changed to Bluff Park School.

The school has gone through various changes over the years. Although some of the older portions of the school building have been demolished, the original main entrance is currently being renovated to be used by the Hoover City Schools central office. Today, the ‘new’ Bluff Park Elementary Schoolcampus sits on the same piece of land as it did almost 100 years ago. The Hoover Historical Society has since found a new home in the Hoover Public Safety Center on Valleydale Road.

Check out this article by Heather Jones Skaggs-Author/Writer for more info on the history of the school: http://ow.ly/cpOB30sai8P . Special thanks to the Hoover Historical Society.

Here are then and now aerial shots of a stretch of Highway 31 that became known as “Motor Mile.” The ‘then’ photo was taken circa 1980. You can see Don Drennen Buick (now Hendrick Chevrolet), Hoover Mall (now Hoover Commons), SouthTrust Bank (now Wells Fargo), and the Green Valley/Star Lake area.

“The Hoover Mall (now Hoover Commons) opened in 1972 with 21 stores. Other businesses on Lorna Road opened and were annexed. “Motor Mile” is the name given to the stretch of Highway 31 occupied by automobile dealers. Beginning in 1973 Don Drennen Buick, Ivan Leonard Chevrolet and Hoover Toyota opened here. Many other dealerships followed: McFarlane Cadillac in 1974 and Tameron and Crown Pontiac in 1980.” – Hoover Historical Society

How did Shades Mountain and Shades Valley get its name? You gotta read this…

Back in 1990, a California man with the last name of Shades contacted the Hoover Historical Society in an effort to research the origin of his family name, as well as any possible connections to the Shades Mountain, Bluff Park, and Shades Valley areas. The Historical Society researched it for two years and was able to find this undated Shades Valley Sun article written by Lou Harper.

“Shades Valley and Shades Mountain actually got their names in 1819…when a man named Shades from Springville heading for the new life out west gave the mountain and the valley his name. And the beautiful shade trees had nothing to do with it other than provide the cover for him to get lost in.” – Shades Valley Sun

You have to read this article to find out the rest. This story mentions the Jefferson County communities of Springville, Bluff Park (Hoover), Mountain Brook, Cahaba Heights, Edgewood (Homewood), Homewood and East Lake (Birmingham). The Hoover Historical Society cannot validate that this article is 100% accurate, but it is interesting nonetheless!

Preparations Underway for Playoff Game/Market Noel Traffic

Hoover Police officers are gearing up for Friday night’s showdown between the Hoover Bucs and the Thompson Warriors, set to take place at 7:00 P.M. at the Hoover Met. Additional officers will be on duty beginning at 3:00 P.M. to assist with incoming traffic and to provide extra security at the stadium. In addition to the football game, the Junior League of Birmingham Market Noel will be taking place at the Finley Center, from 10:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. Traffic in the area will be continuously monitored with officers stationed at nearby intersections. Electronic signboards will be utilized to inform motorists the best route to their intended destination.

Below are a few tips to help make traveling to and from the Hoover Met Complex as convenient as possible:

1. Plan to arrive to your event early. Both events are expected to be well attended. Although officers will be working intersections in the area, heavy traffic will be unavoidable so give yourself plenty of lead-time.

2. Pay attention to the electronic signboards. The signboards will display messages indicating what lane to travel in to reach your desired destination. Those heading to the Market Noel should use the right lane on Stadium Trace Parkway. Football traffic should use the left lane. Residential thru traffic should use the right lane.

3. Parents dropping off their child for football should utilize Champions Way to access the lower Met parking lot.

4. Football fans heading to the game should purchase parking PRIOR to arrival by using the GoFan app or by clicking the following link (https://gofan.co/app/events/458221?schoolId=AL1076 ).

5. Carpool to your event. Whether you are heading to the game or heading to shop, it’s always more fun with a group!

6. When your event has ended, please be patient as you exit the Hoover Met Complex. Officers will be working to get you back home as safely as possible, but traffic will be heavy.

Stay tuned to our social media outlets for updated information, to include a map to help you navigate to your event.
