Federal hiring just changed…again.

A federal judge has blocked Question 3 of the federal Merit Hiring essays, the question asking applicants about presidential executive orders and policy priorities.

However, the judge did NOT eliminate all four Merit Hiring essay questions.

If you are applying for federal jobs, you need to know what changed, what remains, and what happens if you already submitted an answer to Question 3.

There is another important issue: OPM requires applicants to certify that these responses use their own words and were not written by a consultant or AI, including an LLM.

$405,000 annually + benefits.

That is the top of the salary range for an Anthropic Staff Software Engineer opportunity I came across this week.

The number gets my attention.

But here's the career strategy lesson I see in this role, along with two senior federal opportunities at the EEOC and FTC:

Your qualifications establish eligibility. Your positioning establishes relevance.

At higher levels, employers aren't simply looking for more years of experience or a longer list of responsibilities.

They need evidence.

For the $320,000–$405,000 Anthropic role, that means demonstrating technical leadership and business consequence. What did you architect? What did you scale? What complex problems did you solve? What decisions did you own? What improved because of your work?

For senior federal candidates, there is another challenge:

You now have two pages to make your case.

But a two-page federal résumé still needs the federal detail and evidence necessary to demonstrate qualifications and specialized experience.

That means every line needs to earn its place.

North Korean cyber group “WaterPlum” (aka “Contagious Interview”) is compromising job seekers’ computer networks, harvesting sensitive data, and stealing cryptocurrency. WaterPlum is targeting IT professionals in Japan, the United States, Europe, and beyond.

Posing as prospective employers, these actors go after software developers and IT professionals with fake “dream job” offers. They impersonate legitimate AI, NFT, and cryptocurrency companies and use recruiting platforms to reach victims.

Where Could Your Experience Take You Next?

Sometimes the right career opportunity is not about making a bigger move. It is about finding a role where the experience you have built can create meaningful impact at the next level.

I curated three opportunities this week that caught my attention for very different reasons.

1. Director, Business Development – USG | SAIC

If your background includes federal business development, capture, defense, intelligence, and strategic relationship management, this opportunity may be worth exploring.

SAIC lists a salary range of $200,001–$240,000 and remote work potential. The role focuses on U.S. Government business development, strategic campaigns, capture management, procurement pathways, and relationships across the DoD and Intelligence Community.

The preparation question I would ask: Can your career story clearly demonstrate the size, complexity, and results of the opportunities you have influenced?

2. Senior Level Contract Officer | U.S. Department of Justice

This GS-14 opportunity in Washington, DC offers a salary range of $143,913–$187,093 and focuses on complex acquisitions, high-dollar contracts, acquisition strategy, negotiations, and contract administration.

If this aligns with your experience, specificity will matter. Your application should make it easy to understand the complexity of the work you have performed and how that experience connects to the requirements of the role.

3. Business Intelligence Platform Developer | Social Security Administration

For an experienced technology professional, this GS-14–15 opportunity in Woodlawn, Maryland offers a different path.

The salary range is $143,913–$197,200, with an emphasis on WebFOCUS, enterprise BI applications, analytics, data integration, technical leadership, and scalable solutions. The announcement also highlights the potential use of AI with BI solutions.

Here, I would look beyond the technology list. Your strongest story may be the business or organizational impact your technical expertise has made possible.

Three opportunities. Three very different career paths.

But there is one common thread: your experience has value when you position it in a way that makes that value clear.

Before you pursue any opportunity, ask yourself: What does this organization need this person to accomplish...and how does my experience prove I can do it?

That is where strategic career marketing can make a difference.

"Any of them."

Those are the three words I remember most from September 11, 2001.

I had been up most of the night with my sick 18-month-old son and had just gotten to sleep when my dad called.

"Hey, Sis. Turn on your TV."

"What channel?"

There was a long pause. When he finally answered, his voice was quiet.

"Any of them."

Twenty-five years later, I can still hear him saying it.

There is more to that phone call than I have ever shared publicly, including why I now understand that my dad wanted to be the person who told me what was happening that morning.

But there is something else I remember about September 11.

We came together.

In my career work after 9/11, I began hearing people tell me something I hadn't heard in quite the same way before:

"I want to serve my country because of what happened on September 11."

I heard it again and again. Many of those people are still serving our country today.

A lot has happened in 25 years. The world has changed. Things have evolved. We have evolved.

There was nothing good about what happened that day. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost and thousands of families were forever changed.

But there was something good in how people responded.

People helped strangers. Communities came together. People found ways to serve. For a time, some of the things that separated us didn't seem quite as important.

Maybe remembering September 11 shouldn't only be about remembering what happened to us.

Maybe it can also be about remembering who we were for one another afterward.

We don't need another tragedy to find our way back to that.

We can start with the small, everyday things that bring us together.

OPM issued a memo directing agencies to expand AI across specific parts of the hiring process, and resume screening is one of them.

It's federal policy as of August 27, 2026.

That is the direction OPM set when it told federal agencies to expand their use of AI in hiring, especially in resume screening and job announcement writing.

Four areas are now open to AI: drafting job postings, screening resumes and checking qualifications, pre-offer quality checks, and analyzing time-to-hire.

Final hiring decisions still require a person. That part does not change.

What does change is your resume strategy. You are now writing for an algorithm's first pass and 5 more humans after it passes the first gatekeeper.

Match the job announcement's exact language, spell out acronyms, and state your results in specific, measurable terms.

If you are applying to a high-volume federal posting, treat an AI-assisted first screen as the default, not the exception.

Your Next Career Move Might Not Be What You Think.

I found three opportunities this week that span federal technology, IT strategy, and corporate finance, and each one could be a compelling move for someone whose experience goes beyond the obvious job title.

First, if COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and IDMS are part of your background, the Social Security Administration has IT Specialist (APPSW) COBOL Developer openings in Woodlawn, MD. The role is GS-14/15, $143,913–$197,200, permanent, and the announcement specifically points to legacy modernization, technical leadership, and AI-enabled development.

Second, the Defense Human Resources Activity is looking for an IT Specialist (Policy and Planning) in Seaside, CA or Alexandria, VA. This GS-13/14 opportunity pays $121,785–$197,200, is telework eligible, and has promotion potential to GS-14. The work centers on strategic planning, investment management, product roadmaps, enterprise IT, risk, and executive-level decision support.

Third, Meta is hiring a Director, Corporate Finance in Menlo Park, CA +1 location. The listed U.S. base salary is $219,000–$288,000, plus bonus, equity, and benefits. The role calls for 15+ years in finance or capital markets, complex financing ex*****on, infrastructure financial modeling, due diligence, negotiation, and communication with executives and credit rating agencies.

For the SSA opportunity, your application needs to make specialized technical depth and modernization experience unmistakable. For the DHRA role, your story needs to show that you can translate technology, investment, risk, and policy into strategic decisions. For Meta, the value proposition is broader: financing expertise, infrastructure knowledge, executive communication, and the ability to move complex transactions from structure to close.

That is the career-marketing bridge I want you to think about. The strongest application is not simply a record of what you have done. It makes it easier for the decision-maker to see why your experience fits the problems this role needs solved.

Three Senior-Level Opportunities Worth a Closer Look

If your next career move needs to reflect the full scale of your leadership experience, not simply your job title; these three opportunities caught my attention.

The first is a Nuclear Engineer, NN-04, with the Department of Energy’s Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors. With a Washington, DC salary range reaching $197,200 and an NN-04 band equivalent to GS-14/15, this is a highly specialized opportunity for an engineering leader with experience across nuclear propulsion, technical requirements, contractor oversight, safety, and complex program environments. The announcement also emphasizes technical and written communication, and the first two pages of the resume receive structured technical review.

The second is Peraton’s Senior Director – Technology Program Manager in Washington, DC, with a target salary range of $229,000–$366,000. This role calls for 18 years of experience, enterprise IT program leadership, federal DOT experience, ITIL knowledge, executive-level government engagement, organizational leadership, contract management, and the ability to lead complex infrastructure and service environments.

The third is Salesforce’s Program Executive – Senior Director, Consumer Goods and/or Manufacturing. It is a U.S.-based remote role with approximately 25% travel and a base salary range reaching $304,700 nationally and $332,600 in certain higher-cost locations. The role centers on enterprise transformation, executive client relationships, program P&L, delivery governance, large-scale teams, and strategic technology implementation.

Here is the strategic thread I see across all three: senior-level opportunities require you to make the scale, complexity, business impact, and leadership scope of your experience immediately understandable.

Your career marketing needs to connect what you have done with what the organization needs you to accomplish next.

For the DOE role, that means demonstrating technical depth and specialized engineering experience. For Peraton, it means showing enterprise-scale technology leadership and federal customer credibility. For Salesforce, it means translating transformation, consulting, executive influence, and delivery leadership into measurable business value.

The opportunity is not just finding a role that matches your background. It is positioning your background so the decision-maker can quickly see the connection.

I came across three opportunities that caught my attention because each one calls for a strong combination of technical expertise, leadership, and the ability to operate at a higher level.

If you have been thinking about your next move, I would look beyond the title and ask a more important question: Does the way you communicate your experience make the connection between what you have done and what this organization needs obvious?

𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 — 𝗩𝗔 | 𝗟𝘆𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗡𝗝
Are you a psychiatrist with strengths in clinical judgment, medication management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and Veteran-centered care? This GS-15 opportunity offers $270,000–$285,000, telework eligibility based on agency policy, and a telemental-health component.

The position also lists EDRP eligibility, federal retirement and insurance benefits, substantial paid leave, malpractice protection, and possible CME reimbursement.

𝟮. 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 — 𝗩𝗔 | 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘀, 𝗧𝗡
This GS-14 opportunity is particularly interesting if your background combines psychology with program leadership, resource management, staff supervision, quality assurance, and organizational problem-solving.

The salary range is $145,643–$189,342, and the announcement remains open through September 30, 2026. The role is not remote and includes significant responsibility for translating organizational goals into controlled, measurable operations.

𝟯. 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 — 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗖 | 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗩𝗔
If your background is in federal business development and capture, this one deserves a closer look.

SAIC is seeking someone who has demonstrated success winning large, complex federal prime contracts exceeding $100M. The role offers a target salary range of $200,001–$240,000, hybrid work, and responsibility for leading multiple pursuits across civilian markets.

Here is the career-marketing point I would not overlook:

Your experience needs to tell the story of the level at which you operate.

For a senior federal or private-sector opportunity, listing responsibilities is not enough. Your positioning should make your scope, decisions, leadership, outcomes, and value visible.

That is especially important when your experience spans government, military, healthcare, consulting, or federal contracting and you are trying to translate that experience into a new opportunity.

The right opportunity is only part of the equation.

How you position yourself for it matters, too.
