What an excellent example by Wynne and Duet of a halt with the horses shoulders lifted! Duet’s MO is to drop her chest and drag herself forward with her front legs instead of taking deliberate powerful steps with the hind legs. Wynne is using the image of lifting an iron bar that goes between her knees through the horses chest to lift Duet’s shoulders and shift her weight onto her hindquarters 😊

In this video we can see Peggy working on staying balanced on top of her “surfboard”

When the horse moves forward there is a circular motion to that movement, it goes up/forward then back/down. Very similar to a wave in the ocean, and just like a surfer it’s the rider’s job to stay aligned and balanced on top of the energy created by the wave. This can only be achieved if the rider is in “Ear shoulder hip heel” alignment. Peggy originally was in a lean back water skier position, which put her behind the wave and inhibited Joey’s ability to freely move forward. By giving her the image of pushing her pecs into a strong gust of wind, Peggy was able to stay on top of Joey’s wave allowing him to lengthen his neck and step through with his hind leg.

✨Lesson Openings Available✨

Merideth is a certified RWYM rider biomechanics coach, who has experience teaching beginners to advanced riders. Using her knowledge of anatomy, learning theory, and the connection between the rider and horse’s bodies, she is able to improve the horse through improving the rider.
Merideth started riding with Mary Wanless at the age of 12 and began her journey to becoming a coach at 19. She is also a USPC alumni and attended championships in dressage.
While most of her experience is in dressage, she also has experience in retraining OTTBs, classical dressage, reining, lower level eventing, mounted games, and pleasure classes.
Merideth has helped many kids and adults improve their riding, gain a good riding foundation, and enjoy their horses more!
