Shortly after 11:00 PM the Islip Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a vehicle fire on the eastbound Southern State Parkway just before the ramp for southbound Islip Avenue. Islip crews arrived to find an involved auto with the occupants safely out of the vehicle and uninjured. The fire was extinguished without incident and the scene was turned over to the New York State Police

Today marks 25 years since the unfathomable tragedy of September 11th 2001. Today, please pause and reflect on the tragic loss of the 2,996 innocent people who lost their lives that fateful day including the 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police Officers, and 23 NYPD Officers. We also reflect on the countless victims who have passed away or still suffer with serious medical ailments from this horrific tragedy.

The Islip Fire Department was lucky enough to have all of our many members who also worked for the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and other NYC emergency entities make it home that day, but many others did not.

The Islip Fire Department assisted in the rescue efforts on September 11th by sending our Tactical Rescue unit 3-4-14 to ground zero while Engine 3-4-9 covered a firehouse in Queens.

We urge everyone to try to take some time out of your day today to pay respects for the fallen. Please join us at the annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Islip Town Hall beginning at 5:00 P.M.

At 6:57 PM this evening the Islip Fire Department was alerted to a reported commercial structure fire at the Winter Bros Shipyard located at 21 Athasca Road. Numerous calls were being received including callers from across the canal reporting a building on fire. First to arrive was 2nd Assistant Chief Farrell who confirmed an active fire in a commercial building and transmitted the working Fire (Signal 35). Chief of Department Macchio arrived ahortly after establishing a command post and requested a 2nd Alarm mutual aid plan. Islip crews stretched three handlines to the structure to tackle fire on both the first and second floors. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and all searches proved negative for any victims. Due to the structure being on the canal mutual aid fire boats from the Bay Shore & East Islip Fire Departments were requested to assist with firefighting operations and to ensure the safety of all members working along the dockside of the building. The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour. Mutual aid was provided by the Bay Shore Fire Department for 1 ladder and 1 fire boat, East Islip FD for 1 engine and 1 fire boat, West Islip Fire Department for a FAST team, Islip Terrace FD for a standby engine at our headquarters, Central Islip Fire Department for a standby truck at our headquarters, and Exchange Ambulance of the Islips for EMS support and rehab. Two firefighters were treated at the scene and released. Due to fuel and hazardous materials within the building the The Town of Islip hazmat team was requested along with the NYS DEC and the U.S. Coast Guard due to potential fuel and chemical run off into the canal. The cause of the fire was not known and is currently under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department arson squad.

At 11:29 hours this morning the Islip Fire Department was alerted to a report of a residential structure fire at 116 Baltimore Street. Units arrived to find an extinguished fire from the electrical service to the home. PSEG was requested to assist, and the area around the house service was overhauled. The fire had not extended beyond the immediate area. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the East Islip FD and the Bay Shore Fire Department

Over the years, the Turkey Trot has grown into one of the premier Thanksgiving Day running events on Long Island. At 1:22 PM the Islip Fire Department and the Exchange Ambulance of the Islips were notified for a motor vehicle accident involving an overturn on Saxon Avenue just north of Moffitt Blvd. Crews had just returned from a prior alarm so were already in house when the call was received. Engine 3-4-7 responded immediately upon activation and was on scene in under 3 minutes finding a single vehicle accident with the vehicle overturned and the driver trapped but conscious and alert. The crew utilized the Hurst tool to open the lift gate of vehicle and simultaneously removed the windshield of the vehicle. After access was gained they were able to extricate the victim to the awaiting Exchange Ambulance crew for treatment and transport.
