The Abbie Shelterโ€™s 50th Anniversary Celebration, honoring five decades of supporting individuals affected by domestic violence in the Flathead Valley.

โœจ Molly performed to โ€œDog Days Are Overโ€ by Florence + The Machine, celebrating freedom and new beginnings.

โœจ Mindy performed to a remix of โ€œStayinโ€™ Alive,โ€ tying into the eveningโ€™s disco theme and honoring the strength it takes to keep going.

โœจ Alanna, a survivor of domestic abuse, shared a message of hope through her performance: Healing isnโ€™t always easy, but there is hope on the other side. โ€œIโ€™m very grateful for where I am in life right now, and that I didnโ€™t give up searching for a way out.โ€

We hope our performances remind women that they deserve to feel empowered, supported, safe, and free.

Thank you to Abbie Shelter for 50 years of meaningful work in our community. ๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you to Abbie Shelter for 50 years of supporting individuals affected by domestic violence. It was an emotional night performing in memory of Emily while also celebrating the incredible work you have done for our community.

I spoke briefly with Emilyโ€™s mom about how much we miss Emily and about Emilyโ€™s Law, which was passed to make it easier for judges to mandate GPS ankle monitors for individuals with domestic violence offenses. Emilyโ€™s story has helped create change, and the resources the Abbie Shelter provides continue to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout our community.

We are so grateful to have an organization like yours here in the Flathead Valley. Thank you work you do and the hope you offer to those in need. ๐Ÿ’œ

Remembering Emily | Domestic Violence Awareness Part 3

When Emily was our studio photographer, we had a photoshoot planned at a beautiful rose garden. Just a few days earlier, Emily had filed for divorce and a restraining order from her abusive ex.

To spite her, he took the camper where Emily and her daughters were living. He took their clothes, bedding, Emilyโ€™s jewelry inventory and metalsmithing tools, and her camera equipment. He left them with essentially the clothes on their backs. According to Emily, the sheriff told her that because the camper was still in both of their names, it was not technically considered stolen.

Emily no longer had a camera for our photoshoot. But she still showed up, borrowing a camera from a friend to make it happen.

At the time, we thought Emily was nearly out of her abuserโ€™s grasp.

Tragically, the morning before their divorce was to be finalized, Emilyโ€™s abuser attacked her in her home, killing Emily, her three-year-old daughter Piper, and her friend Cody Nevins. He was found about a half-mile away, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Stunned and devastated by this senseless act, the Flathead County community rallied around Emily, Piper, Cody, and their surviving loved ones. GoFundMe accounts for Emily and Codyโ€™s surviving children raised $90,000 seemingly overnight, followed by an Instagram auction that raised another $18,000. A meal train was organized for Emilyโ€™s parents.

With the support of Montana Woman Magazine, I took up the torch of domestic violence awareness, working with them on an article to share Emilyโ€™s story. Our performers also made a promise: we would choreograph the piece Emily had wanted to create but never got the chance to. An aerial act created to bring awareness to domestic violence.

Now, we are finally performing that piece at the Abbie Shelterโ€™s 50th Anniversary Disco Fundraiser, celebrating an organization that has spent five decades supporting people affected by domestic violence in our community.

Remembering Emily; Domestic Violence Awareness Part 2

Elevated Aerial has only been in the Valley since last year, but I owned a studio in Kalispell before this one, and Emily was our studio's photographer.

In the two years she was shooting for us, Emily took thousands of photos of us; from professional performances and student showcases to classes and photoshoots. These gorgeous sunset photos were from a live performance called "The Deadication" at The Stillwater Landing in Olney (actually one of her favorite spots and where her family would later hold her memorial service).

Before Emily was murdered by her abusive ex-partner, along with her three-year-old daughter and her friend, Cody Nevins; Emily told me she wanted to perform at our next student showcase a piece for domestic violence awareness and she asked for our help with the choregraphy. She was getting out of an abusive relationship and looking toward the future. Aerial arts had been a source of strength for her and she wanted to use it to help other women.

She never got the opportunity to create that piece. After Emily's death, we vowed to create the piece she would never get to.

This weekend, three Elevated Aerial Studio performers will take the stage carrying pieces of the message she wanted to share. A message about strength, hope, and freedom. About the possibility of moving forward. And about empowering women with the knowledge that they deserve to be safe.โ™ฅ๏ธ

We will perform in Emily's memory at the Abbie Shelter 50th Anniversary Disco Fundraiser, celebrating an organization that has spent five decades supporting people affected by domestic violence in our community.

Fifteen years ago, I met Emily Mohler at a high-energy dance party called Bass Boat.

I still remember her purple-feathered hat and matching purple feather earrings. She was vivacious, artistic, and seemed to know everyone. She spent the night dancing, giving hugs, and taking photos with her camera, capturing the huge smiles of everyone around her.

Over the years, our paths continued to cross. In 2014, when I needed a photographer for a pole photoshoot, Emily was the first person I called.

Eventually, she became much more than our photographer. She became part of our aerial community.

In 2018, Emily told me she was working her way out of an abusive marriage and was ready to thrive. She was looking for opportunities for strength and growth, and she wanted to try aerial.

We traded a studio membership for photography services, and over the next two years, Emily took thousands of photographs for our community. She documented our classes, photoshoots, fundraisers, and performances while also beginning her own journey as an aerialist.

She was finding her strength and building a new life.

And then, in 2020, Emily was murdered by her abusive ex-partner, along with her three-year-old daughter and her friend, Cody Nevins.

This Saturday, Elevated Aerial will perform at the Abbie Shelter's 50th Anniversary Disco Fundraiser, honoring Emily and her wish to choreograph a piece for domestic violence awareness.
