Member Spotlight 👉 Old Island Restoration Foundation!

Founded in 1960, the Old Island Restoration Foundation (OIRF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving Key West’s historic architecture and cultural heritage. 🌴

The organization played a key role in protecting the city’s Historic District and continues its preservation work through educational programs, cultural events, and community initiatives.

Since 1974, OIRF has also cared for the Oldest House Museum and Tom Majors Garden, its headquarters and the site of the oldest surviving residence in South Florida, dating all the way back to 1829. 😮

Today, the Oldest House offers visitors a glimpse into the people, stories, and traditions that have shaped Key West for nearly two centuries.

A playhouse on the waterfront? 🌊

Well, it's actually called the Waterfront Playhouse, and it's an icon of Key West culture!

The Waterfront Playhouse traces its roots to 1939, when the Key West Players first began staging productions around the island. In 1961, with the support of legendary playwright Tennessee Williams, the troupe established a permanent home in a renovated 1880s ice warehouse at historic Mallory Square, creating the Waterfront Playhouse known today. 🎭

For more than 80 years, this nonprofit, 150-seat theater has entertained locals and visitors with exceptional professional theater, showcasing talented artists from Key West and beyond. Located in the heart of Mallory Square, the Playhouse offers a diverse lineup of productions just steps from Key West’s famous sunset celebration!

With ongoing support from donors and the community, the Waterfront Playhouse continues to preserve its legacy while bringing live theater to life in the Florida Keys. 🌴

A piece of Key West history you can step inside. 🏛️

Built in 1892, the Hellings Curry Museum is housed in a beautiful Queen Anne-style residence with deep ties to Key West history...

Originally home to Eleanor Curry Hellings, daughter of William Curry, Florida’s first self-made millionaire, the property later played a role in the planning of the Overseas Railroad Celebration and served as the Monroe County Public Library from 1941 to 1959.

Today, the home is preserved by the Key West Woman’s Club as the Hellings Curry Museum, honoring the Curry and Hellings families while celebrating the island’s rich past. ❤️

This place is nothing to shrub at!

In the early 2010s, Patrick Garvey found Grimal Grove on Big Pine Key, a then neglected property that was overrun with debris and largely overlooked. 🌴

But where many others had seen an abandoned lot, Patrick saw potential.

Inspired by the story of Adolf Grimal, the original creator of the grove and a passionate tropical fruit enthusiast, Patrick and his partner, Josef Crosby, took on the challenge of bringing the property back to life!

Through years of hard work, research, and dedication, they transformed Grimal Grove into a thriving botanical garden filled with rare and exotic tropical fruit trees! 🌱

Today, the grove stands as a living tribute to Adolf Grimal’s horticultural legacy and a beautiful reminder of what can happen when passion, perseverance, and a love for the Florida Keys come together.
