What an AMAZING gift!! Today I was gifted an Acorn Barnacle that came off a Humpback Whale once it arrived in Hawaii. The barnacle takes Holdfast on the whales skin and filter feeds on plankton in the water. Quite often the barnacle will get knocked off the whales skin during activities like tail slaps, head lunges, pectoral fin slaps and or full body breaches. We find skin quite often in the landing zone of the these behaviors but have never had the chance to hold an acorn barnacle.

Maui is currently experiencing some solid surf along the south side of the island. It might not look like it but this wave had a 8-10 foot face. As winter storms are setting up in the South Pacific we are starting to feel the energy. EXCELLENT for surfing….terrible for kayaking and snorkeling.

When enjoying Maui’s ocean make sure you pay attention to the conditions and read all signs posted on current conditions.

What catches your attention first, the beauty of the turtles or the crackling noises from the reef?? This turtle was enjoying a nice cleaning while a second one waited its turn. 🐢🐢
