AKC's Message On Dog Safety At AKC Events - Posted September 21 -
Dog shows are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our dogs, enjoy the camaraderie of the sport, reconnect with friends, and take part in spirited competition. From the excitement around the ring to time spent with fellow exhibitors, these events are meant to be rewarding experiences for everyone involved.
At the center of every dog show, however, are the dogs themselves. No ribbon, title, or competition is more important than their health, safety, and well-being. Everyone who attends an AKC event with a dog, shares in the responsibility of providing attentive, responsible care throughout the day and being prepared to act when circumstances change.
Whether at the show site, in grooming areas, at hotels, or traveling to and from an event, good judgment, proper supervision, and appropriate safety measures are essential. AKC has developed a series of reminders and best practices to help keep dogs safe, healthy, and well cared for at every event.
The tips are attached and will soon be provided to AKC Clubs in poster form for display at events.
Keeping Dog Safety at the Forefront
The safety of dogs at AKC events is a shared responsibility. Taking additional precautions, remaining attentive to the dogs in our care, and being prepared for unexpected situations can make a meaningful difference. We encourage exhibitors, handlers, clubs, and event personnel not only to look out for their own dogs, but also to speak up when they see a situation that may put any dog at risk.
In the coming weeks, AKC will roll out additional educational materials across its platforms to reinforce dog safety and responsible care at events. Our sports are at their best when the dogs at the heart of them are safe, healthy, and well cared for. By keeping their well-being at the forefront, from arrival through the conclusion of the day, we can help ensure AKC events remain safe, positive, and enjoyable experiences for dogs and people alike.
