The U.S. Air Force has officially identified the service member who tragically died after falling approximately 170 feet during a pregame demonstration at Saturday's UTSA-Navy football game as Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a decorated 15-year military veteran.

Patterson was one of four Airmen scheduled to rappel from the Alamodome rafters before kickoff when he reportedly lost control during his descent and fell onto the field.

Patterson served as a Tactical Air Control Party instructor and was named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022.

“This tragedy is felt deeply across the 57th Wing,” said Brig. Gen. Scott C. Mills, adding that the Air Force is focused on supporting Patterson's family and fellow service members.

Rest in peace, Ian Patterson 🇺🇸🙏🫡💙

On October 10th, Philadelphia Police Officer Shane Seiber and his partner Officer Hector Rodriguez responded to a radio call for a person armed with a gun in West Philadelphia. When they arrived at the residence, and located the male suspect on the porch, he shot both officers multiple times. The gunman continued to fire at responding officers before he was eventually found hiding in a rear alley and taken into custody. He has since been charged with murder and several other offenses.

The two officers were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where despite lifesaving measures, Officer Seiber succumbed to his wounds later that morning. 33-year old Police Officer Hector Rodriguez, who sustained 12 gunshot wounds in the attack, still remains hospitalized as he continues his recovery.

Officer Shane Seiber was a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. Throughout his career, he served in the 22nd and 19th Police Districts. In addition to his time in law enforcement, Shane proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Dover Air Force Base, where he was assigned to the 436th Security Forces. Shane completed two combat tours in Iraq between 2007 and 2009.

Outside of his service to his country and community, Shane enjoyed video gaming, especially World of Warcraft. He also enjoyed exercising and practicing jiu-jitsu. Shane had a remarkable ability to bring a smile to everyone’s face and make anyone laugh. Known affectionately by the nickname “Colgate” for his ever-present smile, he brought joy to the lives of those around him. His warmth, humor, and infectious smile will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Officer Shane Seiber was 40-years old, and leaves behind a loving wife and two young children. He will be laid to rest next week.

Carlsbad State Veterans Cemetery Receives $16.7 Million Federal Grant

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) has been awarded $16,711,624 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to establish the Carlsbad State Veterans Cemetery. The funding is provided through the VA National Cemetery Administration’s Veterans Cemetery Grants Program.

The State of New Mexico has also provided $600,000 in preconstruction funding for architectural design and construction documents. The project has been a collaborative effort, with continued support and commitment from the City of Carlsbad and Eddy County throughout its development.

With federal funding secured, the State will move forward with selecting a general contractor and developing a construction schedule. Site preparation is anticipated to begin in early spring 2027, with construction expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.

“With the VA’s $16.7 million investment in the Carlsbad State Veterans Cemetery, we honor the commitment made in 2014 when state, county and city leaders came together with a shared vision for our veterans in southeast New Mexico,” said NMDVS Cabinet Secretary Jamison Herrera. “This collaborative effort ensures that the men and women who served our nation will have a dignified place of rest close to home, surrounded by the communities they devoted their lives to protecting.”
