What is the relationship between speed and safety when it comes to motorcycling? Is it as simple as saying slower = safer? Are the best riders you kno fast or slow? Are the best riders in the world fast or slow? What is the fastest line around a racetrack compared to the safest line around the racetrack? (Hint- you don’t get points for crashing)

Training is more than just practicing with your controls/inputs, body position, etc…

Training includes your eyes and your mindset. Do you have a mantra that snaps you into focus? Do you have a plan? Do you think about the fatal points on your ride? Do you have strategies for dealing with traffic? Do you hunt with your eyes and give your brain the information that it wants? Do you have a way to get re-focused partway through your ride?

Brothers and sisters- Do you value your life?

World Champion Casey Stoner says don’t go crazy changing the bike the easiest thing to change is you.

Studies have shown that riders actually crash before hitting the obstacle due to panic (had to lay ‘er down). If you have the brake lever covered you save time which equals distance which keeps you calm in a tense situation.

From Ken Hill who is one of the premier coaches in America.

Front tire traction- The amount of grip the front tire has on the road or track for the given conditions. Front tire traction is affected by (a) Brake Pressure and (b) lean angle (i.e. to avoid exceeding available Front tire traction, a rider will need to reduce lean angle in order to add brake pressure, or alternatively, reduce brake pressure to add lean angle).

What is to be learned from this? If we believe we must be completely off the brakes in order to use lean angle or completely straight up and down to use brake pressure that is a false belief. It simply means that we must be smooth and linear with all of our inputs so we can “sneak up” on the limits of traction vs an abrupt input which can very suddenly exceed the limits of traction and you’re down before you know it.

Is it important to be “good” when participating in something that can kill you? What is the definition of a “good motorcyclist”? A definition should be clear and it should be brief. Here’s one I have heard and like.

A good motorcyclist is able to consistently and predictably operate the bike to a point of being able to hop on any motorcycle in any conditions and safely carry enough pace to have fun.

Have you ever heard that you can’t use the brakes while leaned over? Have you ever heard that you have to get all your braking done in a straight line?

The best riders in the world use their brakes to control speed, direction, and chassis geometry.

Everything we do on corner entry has one purpose -to get the bike pointed in the right direction she we can accelerate.

One of these two motorcycles has direction, one doesn't. The outside rider didn't quite make the apex, and is pointed to the gravel outside the corner... But all is not lost!
If the outside rider adds throttle, they'll open their radius and run wide. Instead, the rider simply needs to stay with the brakes until they're happy with their speed and direction. Sure, you might lose a little time off a lap or overslow on the street, but you'll finish the lap or miss the guardrail and oncoming traffic!

Ride the bike based on direction.

Why are fighter pilots and other pilots drawn to motorcycling? It’s because the eye speed is virtually the same. Are you focused on using your eyes properly? It is the #1 order of the sport. Everything else you do on the bike depends on how well you use your eyes.
