The Joy, History, and Pageantry of the Raks Al Shamadan:

There is nothing quite like entering a room balancing a glowing candelabra on your head!

The Raks Al Shamadan—the Egyptian candelabra dance—has such a fascinating, evolving history. Many know its iconic roots in traditional Egyptian wedding processions (Zeffa), where dancers lit the way for the bride and groom, bringing light and blessings to the new couple. Over time, it grew into a mesmerizing theatrical art form, complete with dramatic floorwork and intricate balance that captivated audiences on stage.

As all living art forms do, it adapts with modern times. While scholars and history lovers cherish its origins, for so many Egyptian families—both in Egypt and across the diaspora—it’s not about over-analyzing the past. It’s about the pure joy, pageantry, and celebration of their rich culture!

And thankfully, modern technology makes bringing that magic anywhere much easier! While open flames were the traditional standard, today’s battery-operated LED candles allow us to capture all the excitement, drama, and warm glow without the fire hazard—making it safe for indoor venues of all kinds.

I’ve been hired to perform with the Shamadan for everything from wedding anniversaries to birthday parties, and the energy always shifts the second the candles light up. Here’s a snippet from a presentation on Egyptian dance I gave at a local senior living community. Seeing the smiles light up in the room is a great reminder of why this tradition remains so deeply cherished.

Whether in a grand wedding march or an educational showcase, sharing the warmth and pageantry of the Shamadan is always a joy. ❤️✨

When sharing dances from other cultures, I always approach the work with deep respect, care, and integrity. My priority is to represent these traditions to the absolute best of my ability, constantly guided by the insights, feedback, and lived experiences shared directly by people of the culture.

This is important to Arabesque World Dance and our dance community.

Hope you enjoy the video! ♥️
