Respecting Your Body Through Healing - Physically & Mentally ❤️🩹
Motherhood has become such a meaningful part of who I am that I felt called to walk alongside other women during one of the most incredible experiences of their lives—the miracle of birth 💕 As I began studying and learning to become a doula, though, I also began realizing that something within my own postpartum body, didn’t feel right!
Physically, I was struggling, and over time, those physical challenges began affecting me mentally as well. I wanted so badly to feel like myself again, but I knew something was different….
Fast forward 17 months, after welcoming our adorable Maximus, I found myself undergoing a complete pelvic floor reconstructive surgery.
I have had surgeries before. I have given birth six times. Typically, I have always been someone who bounces back quickly. I think a part of me expected this recovery to be the same.
It certainly wasn’t!
This surgery humbled me in ways I wasn’t prepared for. The pain was IMMENSE!!!! You get the idea, it was a bit painful 😜 My independence suddenly felt limited. Simple things I had always done without a second thought became things I needed help with. And for perhaps the first time in my adult life, I truly learned what it means to give yourself grace 🫶
As mothers, so much of our identity can become wrapped up in caring for everyone around us—giving birth, raising our children, maintaining a home, keeping life moving and making sure everyone’s needs are met. We become so accustomed to being the ones who care for everyone else that sometimes we don’t know what to do when we are the ones who need to be cared for.
This recovery has given me a great deal of time to reflect, and one of the greatest realizations has been just how incredible it feels to truly have someone to support you!
Life experiences and personal growth have slowly allowed me to break down walls I didn’t even realize I had built—to stop feeling like I have to do everything myself and to welcome support that comes from a place of genuine, unconditional love….
And Cody has shown me exactly what that feels like ❤️
To be loved through the difficult days. To be cared for when I couldn’t do things for myself. To have someone step in without hesitation and carry the weight when I literally… cannot. There really aren’t enough words or enough ways to express how grateful I am for him!
What a beautiful feeling it is to recognize, you don’t always have to be the strong one. Sometimes strength is allowing yourself to be cared for, accepting help, and giving yourself the same grace you so freely give to everyone else 💞
This season has been difficult, but it has also been incredibly meaningful. I’m healing physically, growing personally, and walking away from this experience with an even deeper appreciation for motherhood, my body, my family & the man standing beside me through it all 🙏
Our family and friends have surrounded me in ways I will never forget. The meals that have shown up at our door, the beautiful flowers that have brightened my days, the messages and phone calls simply asking how I’m doing, and the people who have stepped in to help with our children when I physically am not able to do what I normally would… Every Single Gesture has meant more than I could ever adequately express. I will carry your kindness with me long after recovery!
Speaking of recovery…. I’m looking forward to returning to the things I love most!!! Welcoming you into our gym, supporting you through your own health and wellness journey, and stepping back into my role as a doula!
With Love,
~Amy
