Women have been shaping the bicycle industry since its earliest days, not just as riders, but as hands-on problem solvers. In the late 19th century, many women developed mechanical skills out of necessity, learning to maintain and repair their own bicycles at a time when access to technical support was limited.
These early examples of mechanical aptitude laid the groundwork for future innovators. They helped normalize the idea that women belonged not only on bicycles, but also in the technical and engineering spaces behind them. That legacy continues today through engineers like Georgena Terry, Bonnie Tu and Laura Belmar whose designs improved bike fit and comfort, and modern leaders advancing e-bike technology and inclusive design.
These women, and many others, demonstrate that innovation in cycling has never been limited by gender. Their contributions span generations, from hands-on mechanical breakthroughs to sophisticated electric systems, proving that women’s ingenuity is central to the bicycle’s evolution.

Bicycles had their "Day" last week and this is a bicycle from WWI, a German Herrenrad Victoria military bicycle with steel spring tyres. The wartime response to severe rubber shortages.

Germany's wartime army had 80 bicycle corps, with one of the cyclist dispatch riders a certain Gefreiter (lance corporal or senior private) Adolf Hi**er. A messenger, bike rider, for a Bavarian regiment, he took messages to fighting units from the command staff.

Bicycles had been used prior to the war as they were light, simple to repair, portable, and did not have to be fed or fuelled, so easily adaptable for tasks such as field ambulances, machine gun carriers and towing equipment. And as standard civilian roadsters were durable, and widely available, heavy-duty civilian "Herrenrad", Gentleman's Bicycle, models were drafted into service.
