For a while, we thought about just buying a new Squat Pro and selling off the old one, but with how much use our first one got, the only move that made sense was to keep both so nobody ever has to wait and we can reduce wear and tear on each machine. And of course we wanted the XT so our members have access to both options!

Yesterday while I was stranded in Charlotte, the guy that I’ve been buying, selling, and trading with the longest (just over 25 years) sent me a link to an ad for a little more MAX weights to add to the gym.

Our main gym uses IGX weight plates that haven’t been made for around thirty years, so finding them is always tough. IGX made a “for home” version of their patented plates and called them MAX. Same patent number, design, and color. Slightly different name, so we buy them every chance we get since they match up to our IGX plates.

You have no idea what it means to have friends looking out for me. Tom is likely responsible for helping me find well over 1,000 pounds of plates and several machines that we have here.

I have some extra time on my hands so I want to make this post real quick to say two things:

First, I want to thank Steven of Superfitness Gym Equipment | Steven Harvalias for helping us pick up another piece for the MadHouse that I’ve been wanting to get for a while.

Steven always looks out for us and we consider Superfitness to be one of the great partnerships that’s helped build MadHouse to what it is now, and that comes from not only supplying equipment, but also supplying his experience, advice, and friendship.

If you own/operate a gym or you’re thinking of starting one, you’d be hard pressed to find a better ally to be successful in this industry…and you’ve GOT to see his insane 178,000 square foot warehouse! There’s nothing like it.

Second, the reason I’ve got some extra time on my hands is because the Colorado is having bad day and I seem to have lost my driveshaft.

A towing company is on the way to carry myself, the trailer, and the truck back to Georgia. It would be easy to see this as a bad day, but it just wouldn’t be the truth.

Yeah, the truck repair isn’t going to be cheap, and neither will the tow from Charlotte to Atlanta, but that’s just the cost of doing business. Nothing ever goes exactly as planned, and calling a deviation of plans a “bad day” just means you weren’t really prepared for what was coming.

I got to meet and talk with a good friend. I got a piece of equipment that I first talked about wanting to upgrade to about two or three years ago. I’m safe…the equipment is safe. And the gym has taken another step forward despite a slight stumble today.

It’s still a win. Every day that you can take even a small step forward is better than backsliding.

Tomorrow, the new piece will still go in the gym, I’ll still make all my scheduled appointments, and we’ll keep taking more steps forward. That’s a good enough day to me!

John Frappier was participating in the 1986 Goodwill Games with the American Gymnastics team, and his work was based on improving an athlete’s speed, power, agility, and neuromuscular efficiency to maximize performance and reduce injury risk, but the BodyBuilding applications for some of his equipment is plain to see.

I try to wear a green shirt when I train and work at the gym so people have an easier time recognizing me in case anyone wants to say hello or ask a question, but this time I decided to a gym shirt from Kissimmee Muscle Gym…another favorite gym of mine. If you’re ever ANYWHERE NEAR the Orlando/Kissimmee area, make sure you drop in.

Powerlifting was my first competitive sport that I gravitated to when I started getting more and more interested in the gym, so putting this display together was a really fun (but tedious) project.

It was nice to go through and see some of the top 20 and top 100 rankings I was in along with a good number of friends and associates that made the cover or the inside of PLUSA.

I know things change, but I miss the magazine era. Making the cover…or making a magazine at all gave a kind of legitimacy that doesn’t really exist today, and the information is always right there…never getting lost in old links to be forgotten as it happens now.

It’s nice to still have the history right there, and even better to share it where everyone can see it instead of sitting in a stack and locked in a case.

There will be lots more to come as we expand the museum throughout the rest of the gym!

Make sure you lean into the stretch, but also make sure the weight isn’t resting on the rubber stops so you keep tension on the muscles through the movement.

Always pull with the goal of moving the elbows back and the shoulder blades squeezed together at the contraction. Try not to think of yourself pulling with your hands or squeezing the handles harder than needed because those things will encourage more of the forearms, biceps, and brachialis to become involved.
