One thing I don’t always mention is that I like to set up kind of far away from the handles because I want to make sure the stack doesn’t come to rest no matter how deep I go into the stretch.

I’m not totally against ballistic training, but when the equipment you use has a good strength profile it makes swinging pointless and detrimental to the set.

This machine is probably most similar to the MedX Tricep that Arthur Jones designed for his new company in 1989. The MedX model has more adjustments but the Compound Tricep is hard to beat, both for its functionality and its simplicity.

The “spider cam” that this machine has is actually the reason for the name Nautilus…as everyone that used the Blue Monster, Jones’ first multi-gym in the late 1960’s, referred to it by the shape of the cams and not the name.

Power runners are great tools and it didn’t take long for this one to light up my hamstrings and glutes to the point of cramping.

Despite the name, this piece works better with deliberate motion because (unlike real running) this machine has both a positive and negative weighted phase, so it’s a little more ballistic and unmanageable if you try to move very fast. The same thing applies to the plate loaded version.

Our first Power Runner was purchased because Transformation Specialist was hoping for a glute machine back in 2017 and he was too strong for the typical low quality 150 pound stack glute machines that were available at the time. It absolutely served its purpose.

We have the selectorized version on the main floor of MadHouse and we have a plate loaded version at the annex.

Ironically, the best Power Runner for real explosive running is fully functional but on display on a shelf in the back room. It was made in the 70’s by Universal gym equipment and I t had a more natural feel because, instead of weights, it used a braking system for the press and a ratcheting system for moving your foot forward.

But for shaping the body, positive and negative resistance are best, so the two we have available work best for our purposes.

This was one of the first pieces that we fully refurbished ourselves, and it’s still holding up well.

I didn’t have a lot of money when I started but I knew I was willing to bridge the gap with a work ethic that nobody else seemed willing to match.

Especially when it comes to vintage equipment, the sellers are often older, want cash only, won’t palletize, and they won’t ship.

Sometimes you just have to get in the truck and go there…both to make the purchase AND to build those business relationships. And showing up in person makes it MUCH harder to fall for the scammers that are all over the industry.

If it makes the gym better and we can afford it, those are the only factors we consider. The days away from home…the hours stuck in a truck…those inconvenience aren’t factors.

This map was started when we were opening 11 years ago. By this time in 2015 we already had a lease signed, picked up several pieces that would be added to the equipment that was my home gym, and our business license would be approved in September of that year.

Here’s another “sleeper piece” that outperforms most overpriced insta-famous pieces everyone’s going crazy for. These are still somewhat easy to find used and Nautilus, who bought out Star Trac is still making them under their brand.

We welded and crafted our replacement housing covers and caps in-house. I often wonder how people run a gym without being able to make repairs and replacements with a welder on their own.

I guess it can be done though…you’d just have to order mostly new stuff along with a lot of OUT OF ORDER signs to hang on them while you’re waiting for parts or for someone else to fix your things.

There will be MUCH more to come as we continue to reshape MadHouse with a current focus on improving back day.

I want to first say thanks to Jonathan Henry for selling us this piece AND for working with my schedule. Initially, I had planned on meeting him Monday but my first stop in Texas was canceled after the seller with a pretty bad rating got caught giving us a fake address.

With that stop canceled and me already in Mississippi, Jonathan was kind enough to adjust his meeting time to Sunday evening not long after returning from Home Gym Con 2026. I know it had been a long day and it meant a lot that he still met with me despite his drive back from Kentucky earlier that day.

Jonathan will be opening his own studio in the Kansas City, Missouri area so please give him a follow to watch his gym grow!

As for the set, I wanted to get a few more reps in but it was another overcast day and my hands can sometimes swell on those days. Older people can always give you the most reliable weather report because their joints always know first.

The squeeze wasn’t that bad but the stretch pulls so hard it’s like the weight is being ripped from your hands. Normally I’m ready for it but I think it’s time to start investing in hooks for the overcast days.

Cyd Gillon didn’t you make an equipment company bring those back specifically for you? Lol

Back day is always my favorite day to train. I think it comes from a general rule in Strongman. Real strength comes from the back.

If you’re at a Strongman contest and see a guy with big arms and pecs…don’t worry about him. The one you need to worry about out has thick traps, lats, erectors, and glutes. That guy is a human forklift.

We’ve had this machine for over ten years now. I picked it up in Midland, Michigan for $400, and it was the first distance trip I took in the Prius that I had bought it so I could drive for Uber.

After my truck broke down it became my work “truck” and I brought this piece back to Georgia by disassembling it and storing it in the hatchback.

Soon after, I’d go back with a 4x6 trailer to buy our H-Squat from the same guy for $700.

I’ve been working on assessing strength profiles and I’ll be making a lot of changes to our back day lineup soon. The truth is, if a weight is too heavy to get a good contraction or too light to challenge the body in the stretch or beginning phase of the pull, you’ve left a lot behind that could have gone toward your results.

This was my first time trying to manipulate the strength curve by adding plates to the shrug weight horns and I like the way it felt much better. I still try not to use momentum when I’m training but if I’m starting to struggle with getting the handles back far enough for a good squeeze on a piece with an ideal strength curve, leaning back helps reduce the load just enough to finish out the contraction.

If you haven’t used a bilateral row machine like this one, TRY IT! A bilateral stretch and squeeze feels very different than an isolateral one. There will be much change coming soon!
