“Push” and “pull” are simple ways to organize training around movement patterns, but each exercise still involves several muscles working together. 💪

Push movements generally involve moving resistance away from your body.

During upper-body presses, the chest, front delts, and triceps are major contributors.

Bench presses, push-ups, incline presses, dips, and overhead presses are common examples.

Lower-body movements such as squats are sometimes grouped differently depending on the program, but the quads are major contributors when you extend the knees and stand back up.

Pull movements generally involve bringing resistance toward your body or pulling your body toward something.

Rows, pull-ups, and pulldowns train the lats, upper back, rear delts, and biceps to different degrees.

Hip-hinge movements such as deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts also heavily involve the posterior chain, including the glutes and hamstrings.

The important thing to remember is that these categories are organizational tools, not perfect anatomical boxes.

A bench press does not train only the chest.

A row does not train only the lats.

A squat does not train only the quads.

Most compound exercises require multiple muscles to work together.

That is also why push-pull training can be useful. It gives you a simple way to distribute different movement patterns across the week without needing a separate training day for every individual muscle.

Build your program around movement patterns, then use isolation exercises when you want additional targeted work. ✅
