🌟 Famous Friday 🌟
This week's Famous Friday recognizes Master Jon Plumer of Plumer Karate America in Lodi, Wisconsin.
Jon began his martial arts journey in Madison in 1974. In the early 1990s, he transitioned to Karate America and began teaching its system.
In 2001, Jon and his wife, Chris, purchased their first karate school in DeForest. It was a struggling school with just 39 students.
Seven years later, they sold the school with 240 students.
But that was just the beginning.
Over the years, Jon and Chris have opened and sold nine schools to students who wanted to become school owners themselves. Today, they continue to own and operate two schools and teach together in Lodi.
About 17 years ago, Jon took a chance and reached out to legendary martial artist Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, asking if he would come to Wisconsin for a seminar.
He came.
And he has returned every year since.
What started as a simple invitation eventually became a close friendship and a mentorship that Jon still values today.
But when asked about his greatest achievement as a martial artist, Jon didn't mention championships, schools, or business success.
His answer was simple:
“Without question, my greatest achievement as a martial artist has been helping thousands of students reach their goals in life.”
That's what martial arts is really about.
The belts and trophies may eventually become memories, but the discipline, confidence, perseverance, and life skills learned on the mat can stay with a person for the rest of their life.
Thank you, Jon, for decades of dedication to martial arts and for helping create not just martial artists, but instructors, leaders, and school owners.

I am so proud of my son who started just running on the mats. Win or lose he is challenging himself every day to be a better martial artist.

🌟 Famous Friday 🌟
This week's Famous Friday recognizes Master Jason Dutton of Elite Karate Studios in Chippewa Falls.
Growing up in the Wisconsin tournament scene, Jason Dutton was one of the martial artists I looked up to. I remember watching him compete in the old WPKA — Wisconsin Professional Karate Association tournaments. His sparring was something to watch. He was one of those competitors who made you stop and pay attention.
At the time, I didn't realize how much those moments would influence me. Sometimes you learn from someone without ever stepping onto the same mat as them.
Jason has now dedicated roughly 40 years to martial arts and more than 30 years to teaching. He opened Elite Karate Studios in Chippewa Falls in 1997 and has spent decades developing students and instructors. His students have gone on to earn more than 50 national titles.
But what stands out to me most is that his legacy isn't just about what he accomplished as a competitor.
It's about what he has helped other martial artists accomplish.
That's what makes a great martial artist a great teacher. Eventually, the trophies and tournament results become history. What remains is the influence you had on the people watching, learning, and eventually teaching themselves.
For me, Jason Dutton was one of those people.
Before I ever trained with him, I learned from watching him.
Thank you, Jason, for being one of the competitors who helped inspire the next generation of martial artists here in Wisconsin.

🧠 Thoughtful Thursday 🧠
The thing that makes martial arts special isn’t just the techniques.
It’s the community.
Wisconsin has a strong network of martial artists. When I posted that Landon booked his first fight, so many people reached out. Instructors invited us to train, offered sparring partners, and wanted to share tips and tricks they’ve learned over the years.
That kind of support is rare.
Merrill Karate Club isn’t just us in our building. We’re part of a much bigger family of instructors and schools across the state who are willing to help each other grow.
That camaraderie is what makes this journey meaningful.
Grateful for every person who has offered guidance, support, and open doors.
