A quick update from Lanzarote.

Today is September 21, and despite a very busy day, everything is moving forward. I rented a van, removed most of the contents from Spirit, and secured a two-bedroom Airbnb for Eli, Willem, and me, who arrive tomorrow morning at 9:30. Work will begin immediately.

In an incredible stroke of luck, the surveyor who inspected Spirit in Fuerteventura in June happened to be arriving in Lanzarote this morning when I contacted him. He came to the boat this afternoon and completed his initial inspection. Eli and I will now develop the repair plan; the surveyor will approve it, we'll complete the work, and he will return for the final inspection.

Fundraising is coming along, although I adjusted the goal to cover the additional necessary expenses, including the van, accommodations, and other repair costs. For now, we remain on schedule, and the work begins tomorrow.

Thank you for supporting Spirit and me in this endeavor. Please share this post with your friends and help us get closer to the amount needed to complete the repairs and return to sea.

I am truly grateful for everyone’s support and generosity.

For now, as we say here in Spain, ciao!

Spirit Adventures 56 UPDATE FROM LANZAROTE

The repair of Spirit is moving forward, but a few additional expenses have come up.

The Golden Globe Race requires a marine surveyor to inspect the damage, approve the repair plan, and inspect the completed work. That is completely understandable, but it was not included in my original estimate.

Eli, the Dutch boatbuilder, arrives tomorrow with his apprentice, Willem. I have rented an Airbnb for the three of us, along with a van so we can remove and safely store most of Spirit’s contents while the fiberglass work is underway.

Today, I also need to confirm whether the marina will allow us to complete the work in the slip. Almost all of the repair will be done below deck, but if Spirit must be hauled out, that will add another expense.

The estimate is increasing, but not dramatically, and we are moving forward quickly. My goal is still to have Spirit repaired and be back underway within seven days.

The response to the GoFundMe and Venmo appeal has been outstanding. We have not reached the goal yet, so please continue donating and sharing this post. Every contribution helps. A $25 donation may seem small, but those donations add up quickly and make each supporter part of Spirit’s continuing Golden Globe adventure.

Many donations have come from people whose names I do not recognize, which shows just how valuable sharing this message can be.

Because I stopped in Lanzarote for repairs and assistance, I will continue in the Chichester Class, but I remain part of the Golden Globe event and fully committed to sailing around the world.

Thank you for supporting Spirit, for sharing this appeal, and for helping me continue this seven-year dream. I am deeply grateful to every one of you.

A QUICK UPDATE ON SPIRIT

While sailing south toward Lanzarote, I noticed movement in the lower diagonal shroud on the port side, one of the stays that helps support the mast. This is also the side of Spirit that was damaged in the 2022 accident.

The prudent decision was to stop in Lanzarote and arrange a complete inspection of the chainplate area. I needed to determine the extent of the problem, whether it could be repaired, how long the work would take, and what it would cost.

The current estimate is approximately €8,000, close to $10,000, and I simply do not have the funds available to pay for the repair.

That is why I am asking my friends, supporters, and everyone following this adventure for help. If repairs can begin Monday morning, there is still a chance for Spirit and me to rejoin the Golden Globe event in the Chichester Class. This class is for sailors who have stopped or received outside assistance and therefore can no longer compete in the official race standings.

I do not currently have access to a GoFundMe account. The easiest way to contribute is through Venmo:

Every contribution, regardless of the amount, will help bring Spirit closer to being repaired and returning to sea.

Although I would no longer be competing in the official race, I would still be sailing around the world alongside my fellow Golden Globe skippers and pursuing my personal goal of catching up with the fleet. A few boats remain behind me, so I would not be making this journey alone.

I hope this is not asking too much. Your support could help get Spirit repaired, back into the Golden Globe adventure, and sailing toward the Southern Ocean.

Please share this message if you can.

Be kind, think great, and let’s get Spirit sailing again.

Thank you for all the support you have given me in the past, and for whatever support you may be able to offer now. Please share to your circle of friends.
