Did you know that the best time to do lessons is actually in the fall and winter? Kids need time to learn life saving skills for those skills to stick. Waiting till the summer to book lessons makes it difficult for them to learn what is important and also practice those skills. Join us here at COM Aquatics, this fall and see just how much we can teach your child. September swim lesson registration opens THIS Friday, August 14th at 8:00am.

To book, be sure to log on at 8:00am, on Friday via our new website:

____________

What You Can Expect from Us
We want your child to be water competent: to know water can be dangerous, to know what to do if something goes wrong, and to swim calmly to safety. We measure it simply. After your child completes all 6 levels, your child will have the ability to swim 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke, float and tread water. Freestyle is the safety stroke for clear water like a pool; backstroke is for dark water like a lake or river, where you cannot see below you. That is not a swim team goal. That is a life saving goal.

____________

Is Your Child Struggling?
Kelsey McDonald, PT, DPT, and Alex Hilton, PT, DPT, now work with children here on strength, coordination, and development. Ask us about Milestone Classes, swimming is a physical skill before it is a water skill, and the body awareness a child builds on land is what lets them float and breathe with confidence. Call 432-618-9952. More details about these classes, in graphics at the end of this email.

Community demand is one of the clearest indicators of impact.

In 2025, COM Learn to Swim, we offered 2 Mommy & Me classes. This summer, we doubled our capacity to 4 classes per month.

The result…..

• 100% of classes sold out

• More than 90 parents and children participated each month; 270 total parents participated in Mommy and Me

As a nonprofit created by Midlanders for Midlanders, we’re able to respond quickly when our community tells us what it needs. Parents asked for more opportunities to introduce their children to the water, and we listened.

Sustainable growth cannot be achieved by offering more programming. Rather, allowing your team to think creatively, listen to those you serve to removing barriers. In doing this your team can create access and build lifelong relationships with your organization’s mission.

Thank you to every family, community partner, and donor who makes this work possible. Your investment allows us to continue expanding programs where our community needs them most.

As parents, we celebrate every milestone our children reach. Learning to swim deserves to be viewed the same way, not as a summer activity, but as a life skill that develops over time. Water safety swimming is much like reading or riding a bicycle. A child may learn the basics, but confidence, judgment, endurance, and the ability to respond calmly in an emergency are built through consistent practice over months and years.

A confident 4-year-old in a shallow pool faces a very different challenge at age 7 in a lake, river, or deep water. Skills that aren't practiced begin to fade, while regular instruction allows children to continue building stronger, safer habits.

Research from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance has shown that formal year round swim lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning in young children. But the greatest long-term benefit comes when families make water safety part of their routine, not just something they do during the summer.

At COM Aquatics, we've designed our year-round lessons around that philosophy. Every lesson is another opportunity for a child to build confidence, strengthen technique, and develop the decision-making skills that can one day save a life.

As a nonprofit organization, every family who enrolls here at COM helps make life-saving opportunities available to children who otherwise could not afford them through our scholarship programs and community partnerships.

Fall lessons are now enrolling, and we would be honored to continue that journey with your family. Because water safety isn't a season in your child's life. It's a lifelong investment, that parents should actively be engaged with.

Great coaching doesn’t happen by accident.

Over the past few months at COM, we’ve been taking a hard look at how we teach, not just what we teach. (See photos below, from our most recent staff training two weeks ago)

Instead of relying on individual coaching styles, we’ve been building systems that create consistency, accountability, and measurable progress across our entire lessons program.

That means:
-Standardizing instructional expectations.
-Developing coaches, not just swimmers.
-Creating feedback loops that help instructors improve every week.
-Designing an experience where families receive the same high-quality instruction regardless of which coach is on deck.

Proud of the work our team has put into raising the standard, and even more excited about where these improvements will take COM Aquatics next.
