During National Drowning Prevention Week, we want to share a story that shows why the work we do at COM Aquatics matters.

Daniel Elliott was a member of the COM Swim Team from ages 12 to 16. In early June, while fishing from a sandbar about 300 yards offshore, he saw a young girl and her mother struggling in the ocean.

Daniel swam nearly 500 yards to reach them. By the time he got to the little girl, she was unconscious. He was able to bring both of them back to shore and perform CPR on the girl. Thankfully, they are both okay.

Daniel is now 24 and works as a paramedic in San Angelo. When he called his parents afterward, he told them, “There’s no way I could’ve done that without COM and everything I learned here.”

Stories like this remind us that learning to swim is about so much more than competition. The skills, confidence and discipline built in the water can stay with someone for life and, in this case, helped save one.

Through our Power of 5 campaign, your $5 gift helps COM Aquatics continue providing swim instruction and aquatic programs to families across West Texas.

During National Drowning Prevention Week, we are honored to share the Fuentes family’s story.

“On May 7, 2016, we nearly lost our youngest son, Caleb.

We were spending the day swimming with family when Caleb took off his puddle jumper to eat lunch. A few moments later, Stephanie noticed he was missing and found him face down in the spa area of the pool.

She immediately pulled him from the water and began CPR while 911 was called. After what felt like forever, Caleb coughed up water and started breathing again. He was airlifted to the Pediatric ICU in Lubbock and, by God’s grace, came home the next day with no lasting injuries.

There were three adults watching five children that day, but we learned firsthand how quickly and quietly drowning can happen. Caleb had fallen in while reaching for a toy and did not know how to recover or get back to the edge.

That day changed our family forever. Soon afterward, we enrolled all three of our boys in COM Aquatics’ Learn to Swim program. All three later went on to swim competitively with COM.

COM Aquatics has become an important part of our family’s story. We believe deeply in its mission and have been grateful to serve through the Booster Club, hospitality, the Board of Directors, officiating, sponsorships and donations.

We share Caleb’s story because drowning can happen to any family in a matter of seconds. Swim lessons, active supervision and CPR training can save lives.”

The Fuentes family’s story is a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

Through the Power of 5, your $5 donation helps COM Aquatics provide quality swim instruction and greater access to aquatic programming throughout the Permian Basin.

During National Drowning Prevention Week, we are reminded that drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent. It is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5–14.

These numbers are difficult, but drowning is preventable. Quality swim lessons teach more than strokes. They help children build confidence, practice lifesaving skills, understand water safety, and learn how to respond in an emergency.

Your $5 helps COM Aquatics continue providing accessible swim instruction and aquatic programming to families across West Texas.
