We competed in the backyard portion of the September Fest Saturday in Coldwater, MI and had a pretty quiet day overall with an average cook. The judges agreed and placed us right in the middle of the pack as far as scoring goes. Going to run a practice or 2 between now and our season finale competition coming up in Argos on October 3rd.

5th in Chicken
6th in Ribs (Won Wildchild)
5th Overall.

Congrats to Smokin' E's BBQ on his RGC and to Redhog BBQ and Jugheads BBQ on their calls. Good seeing everyone having success and improving every competition.

Cooked my second Rib Cook Off Association event of the year and decided to run it solo. In hindsight, that was an excellent way to make sure I stayed busy from start to finish. Thankfully, friends from Sweet Cleaver Barbecue and Ruby Creek BBQ were close by to lend a hand when needed and, more importantly, give me a hard time when I didn't. It was also great seeing a couple other local teams like Boot Scootin BBQ and Fat for a Reason make the trip to New Lenox.

The wings were probably about 15 minutes shy of where they needed to be for tenderness, but they looked the part and had great flavor. If there was a "Best Looking Wings That Needed a Little More Time" category, I might have had a shot. The baby back cook went pretty well, but they ended up overdone, so I wasn't exactly shocked when they finished near the back of the pack. Definitely a reminder that I need a few more reps with baby backs before I can be competitive. The spare ribs landed an 8th-place call, and I was happy with that cook. I managed to find seven solid bones for the turn-in box, which any rib cook knows can sometimes feel like finding buried treasure. They're close, but still missing that little something to make them really pop.

I have to say, the contests are a refreshing change of pace and a lot of fun. Great people, relaxed atmosphere, no drama, and plenty of good times. We'll definitely keep adding these events to our schedule whenever they're within a reasonable driving distance... and maybe by then I'll have figured out this whole baby back thing.
