Dear Naples Velo Members,
Many of you may have heard about the tragic accident involving the Milligan University cycling team last month. Eleven young riders were struck by a vehicle while on a team training ride. Two sophomores, Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, were killed, and seven teammates were injured.
Tragedies involving cyclists happen far too often, and this one hit particularly close to home. Logan Whitcomb was one of the injured riders. The Whitcomb family has been part of Naples Velo since the club’s beginning, making this tragedy especially personal for our community. Fortunately, Logan survived and is recovering.
When Tish Kelly and Dan Dugan learned what had happened, they stepped in to help. Drawing on their connections throughout the cycling industry, they helped organize an effort to replace the team’s destroyed bikes and equipment. With support from industry partners who donated or substantially discounted components, eight replacement bikes were built and delivered to the team.
The Naples Velo Board also approved a $2,400 contribution to help complete the purchases. While this falls outside our usual donation guidelines, the extraordinary circumstances and connection to our local cycling community made this an opportunity to help.
The $2,400 came from funds that we collect from membership fees and club donations, meaning all 470 Naples Velo members helped make this contribution possible. It is a reminder that our club’s impact extends beyond our own rides and events. Together, we were able to help a group of young cyclists get back on their bikes during an incredibly difficult time.
Thank you to Tish and Dan for taking the initiative, to the industry partners who stepped up, and to our members whose dues made Naples Velo’s contribution possible.
Nothing can replace the lives lost or undo what these riders, their families, teammates, and the Milligan community have experienced. We hope this effort provides some encouragement as the team continues to recover and move forward.
