I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of “parroting” in the training industry.

The problem is… both sides of the argument can be right.

There are absolutely people who borrow someone else’s language, curriculum, concepts, or methodology without ever developing the understanding and competence underneath it. They’ve essentially taken the finished answer without doing the work that produced it.

But I also think “copying” gets thrown around far too broadly. Everyone was a student at some point. We learn from people, train what they teach us, test it against experience, develop competence, study under others, refine our understanding…and eventually some of that knowledge becomes part of what we’re qualified to pass along ourselves.

Somewhere between those two things is a line.

And that line gets considerably more interesting once mentorship, attribution, money, competition, and intellectual ownership all start overlapping.

That’s really what I wanted to explore in this article… not who’s right in some particular industry argument, but what honorable transmission of knowledge actually looks like.

Learning vs. Parroting is live now on the Achilles Heel Tactical blog.

GRIP PRESSURES

Many students have a hard time grasping grip pressure and what that looks like upon presentation and continuing through a string of fire. The goal is always to finish with what you started with, and try not to change anything in the middle of your shot string so that there is consistency and repeatability.

INTENT

Think about what your intent is during a string of fire. Is it to be able to continue firing when able to do so? If so, bringing the gun back to your “work space” off target is only hurting you and your performance. Keep that gun ready to eat and move.

DEVELOPING SKILL

If your goal during training is a pretty target, you more than likely aren’t pushing your skills to the limits. Instead of confirming what you can already do at a slower speed, the best way to develop skill is to push your speed to uncomfortable. Not uncontrolled, but uncomfortable.

AHT UNIVERSAL MAG CARRIER (UMC)

Born on the competition stage out of frustration with carriers that only worked for one platform, the AHT Universal Mag Carrier was designed from the ground up to handle any magazine you run; G***k, steel mag, 2011, and everything in between.

Constructed from high-strength thermoplastic, it’s built to take the abuse of match day and come back for more. The fully adjustable retention system lets you dial in exactly the hold you want with a single tool. No guesswork, no downtime.

Choose between bullets-out or bullets-forward orientation to match your draw style, and fine-tune your position with 30 degrees of cant adjustment for the perfect ergonomic fit.

The open-bottom design keeps debris clearing freely so your gear stays competition-ready, and serves as an installation aid for fast, hassle-free setup with most popular belt mounting options including ELS and Blade-Tech Mini.

One System. Every Platform. Zero Compromises.
Whether you’re building a competition belt, a duty rig, or a belt you wear every single day.

The AHT Universal Carrier system is the last carrier setup you’ll ever need to buy. Available now on www.achillesheeltactical.com
