The trickiest illusion of the mind is believing that wherever we are standing right now, we’re going to stay there forever.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Mental states ebb and flow. You can feel like absolute crap one minute, take a nap, and wake up feeling surprisingly optimistic.
You can be in a honeymoon phase with your job, your spouse, or your kids—and then, five minutes later, they can annoy the s**t out of you. That’s normal.
Remembering this can be life-changing. When you find yourself in a place in your mind that feels like absolute hell, remind yourself: this is not permanent.
Sometimes all it takes is a cold shower, a solid night of sleep, a distraction, or a decent meal to shift your body chemistry enough to change your perspective.
I promise.
As someone who has sheltered in place through many storms of the mind, I’ve learned this: your perspective never stays in one place for too long. And it doesn’t take too much to shift it unless you intentionally keep returning to that painful mental spot and make it your normal hangout.
Know that whatever you’re sensing in that place, it’s ONE PERSPECTIVE. There are so many more perspectives available to you.
Sometimes the most important thing you can do is remember that truth.
