Last night was a tough one.
To be honest, I'm still trying to process it all and find the right words. When you put everything you have into building a show, preparing your fighters, and especially when one of your own steps into the ring, nights like this hit differently.
There were a lot of difficult decisions leading up to this fight. The original fight was contracted at 120 pounds, but our opponent came in 11 pounds over the contracted weight. After already losing our co-main event opponent, we made the decision to move forward and save the main event.
That meant Kevin stepping into the ring at 126 pounds. The highest weight of his career, just to make the fight happen.
And there is no taking away from the experience Kevin was facing. Carlos Buitrago is a seasoned professional with decades of experience in the sport and multiple world-title challenges on his résumé. He has been in the ring at the highest levels of boxing and knows what it takes to compete at that level.
Through all the sudden changes and difficult circumstances, Kevin never complained. He accepted every challenge, trusted the process, and continued to carry himself like a true professional. He is the definition of a professional, inside and outside the ring.
We knew there was risk involved, but we wanted to give the fans the main event they came to see and keep the show together.
As a trainer and promoter, this one hurts differently. Kevin is one of our own, and watching him experience a night like this is difficult.
But this is boxing.
One setback does not define Kevin's career, and it certainly doesn't define his journey. This is one chapter in his story, and I truly believe what happened last night will make him stronger moving forward.
We're going to take a step back, evaluate everything honestly, learn from it, and most importantly, take care of Kevin.
Thank you to everyone who came out, supported our fighters, supported KC Boxing Promotions, and stood behind us last night.
We'll have more to say when we're ready.
