Very scary! So many horses (and apparently pigs and goats too) go unvaccinated for rabies. Unlike cats and dogs, the state does not require horses to be vaccinated so it is up to the individual owner to do the responsible thing and request the vaccine. Always, always ask before interacting or letting your child interact with someone's animal.

All of our horses (and other animals) here at Hoofbeats in Harmony are kept up to date on their rabies vaccine (thanks to our amazing vet Heart Horse Mobile Veterinary Services) so you can rest assured your child is safe interacting with them.

A very important PSA before the week starts- 4 goats owned by a petting zoo in NC have tested positive for rabies. A lot of people get a little lax about keeping their horses, goats, and pigs up to date on rabies.... thinking exposure risk is low and it's not "required" according to the state. We recommend annual rabies vaccination for our patients- please get them up to date if they are not! Parents out there- ask for proof of rabies vaccination of all animals prior to booking a mobile petting zoo or a pony party.

Join us on July 23rd for a special Trial Lesson Day at Hoofbeats in Harmony! It's the perfect opportunity for new students to experience our unique horsemanship program.

For this day only, trial lessons are just $22.50 (regularly $45)!

During the lesson, your child will:

This is a helpful trick for guessing what stirrup length is correct before you get in the saddle. Put your fingertips on the stirrup bar where the stirrup leather attaches to the saddle. Bring the stirrup up to your armpit to check the length. If the stirrup doesn't reach your armpit, it is likely too short. If it passes your armpit, it is likely too long.

While this trick doesn't work for every rider, it is at least a helpful guide. Especially when fast growing kids need to change their stirrup length every few weeks😂. I have them start with this measurement and then we adjust as needed after they get on. Most of the time it is very accurate!

Banjo made a new friend this morning. One of our baby phoebe birds swooped down and landed right on his head 😂🐦. I'm not sure he even noticed, but I'm sure he would be happy to help soften the landing as the little guy learns to fly.

These two phoebes nest in the barn every year and we always enjoy watching the babies grow up and learn to fly.
