What if the reason your pain keeps coming back has nothing to do with how hard you’re trying to get rid of it?

So many people find us after years of doing all the “right” things.

They’ve stretched, strengthened, rested, gotten massages, changed their routines, and found things that helped…
..until they didn’t.

But very few have ever been taught how to actually understand the patterns their body has learned.

That’s one of the reasons we’re so passionate about body mapping.

It gives us another way to work with those patterns, instead of constantly trying to override them.

And as Lauren Freedman, NBC-HWC | Disability • Neuro • Midlife Coach ’s story shows, this work isn’t about one perfect session or one dramatic breakthrough.

It’s something we practice and build on over time, because lasting change comes with consistency.

If you’ve been stuck in your own version of the pain-relief cycle, we’d love to introduce you to a different way of working with your body.

Here’s where to focus instead ⬇️

If you’re a high achiever, you know how to take a problem and turn it into a project.

So when you learn about nervous system regulation, you approach it the same way.

You add breathing exercises, meditation, and vagus nerve hacks to your busy week… and when you’re still exhausted?

It becomes one more thing you feel like you’re failing at. 🫠

But burnout doesn’t just live in your calendar.

It lives in a nervous system that keeps reaching for the same response—even when the moment calls for something different.

When you’re still burned out, you turn the blame inward:

💭 Maybe I’m doing this wrong.
💭 Maybe I’m not trying hard enough.
💭 Why can’t I figure this out?

Your nervous system was never meant to stay calm 24/7.

Sometimes a moment calls for focus and effort. Other times, your body needs to slow down and recover.

Being able to move between those states based on what’s happening around you...

That’s adaptability.

And that’s the ultimate goal.

Here’s the part high achievers don’t expect...

When you approach your work from an adaptable, dominantly parasympathetic state, everything shifts:

Efficiency goes up. You get more done, faster.
Capacity expands. Less overwhelm.
Focus becomes flow. Effort becomes fluidity.

The destination stops being the whole point—the journey starts to matter too. Because the journey, the now, is all that there really ever is.

So if “regulating your nervous system” has become another task to perfect, consider this your permission slip to stop chasing calm as the finish line.

True adaptability comes from rewiring your nervous system to respond to the present, rather than reacting from past patterns.

To do that, you first have to recognize what state your body is actually in.

That’s where Body Mapping comes in.

It gives your nervous system new information so it can stop defaulting to old patterns..

Curious how it works? Go check out our recent post “What is Body Mapping?”

There’s a reason your body hits the brakes when you have POTS ⤵️

And it’s not that it’s giving up.

I know it can feel that way, especially when your energy disappears halfway through something that barely seems like it should count as exertion.

Maybe you had plans you were excited about, finally had the energy to tackle that chore you’ve been putting off, or just wanted to cook a meal without needing to sit down halfway through.

Having your body suddenly say ‘nope, that’s enough’ can be incredibly frustrating.

But your body isn’t making these decisions based on your plans for the day.

Your nervous system is working with the resources it has available, and when those resources are limited, sometimes its best option is to conserve them.

Instead of seeing your body as something that keeps letting you down, get curious about what’s happening underneath and why your nervous system is responding the way it is.

You may not get to choose what your body can handle today, but you can learn to understand what it’s telling you.

If you’re living with POTS and want to explore a different way of supporting your body, I’d love to have you join us for a class. Your first 7 days are on me. 🤍

I spent my life studying movement but couldn’t fix my own knee.

When I tore my meniscus, I did exactly what I thought I was supposed to do: went to physical therapy, followed the plan, did the exercises.

But instead of getting better, my knee got worse.

I was a lifelong dancer and movement specialist, so trust me when I say I knew movement.

I was doing everything right, so what was I possibly missing?

I’d been taught to look at the body in parts. If your knee hurts, you work on the knee. Simple.

But when I found an approach that combined body mapping with joint function and started seeing my knee as part of a much bigger system, everything I thought I knew changed.

My nervous system had learned patterns that affected how I moved, braced, and responded.

When I stopped trying to “fix” my knee and started working with those patterns, my body started changing.

And it didn’t stop at my knee. 💡

I started recognizing connections between my physical patterns and things like perfectionism, people pleasing, and all the ways I’d learned to protect myself.

For the first time, I understood my body as one deeply connected system.

That realization became the foundation for Prism in 2019, and it’s why I’ll never look at a painful body part as an isolated problem ever again.

If you want to experience the work that changed my life, I’d love to have you join a class. Inside our membership, we offer multiple live classes each week.

Chronic pain... What to do when you’ve already tried everything? This ⬇️

By the time someone finds their way to me, body mapping is usually the last stop on a long list of things they’ve tried to make their chronic pain go away.

I’ve worked with people who have spent years exploring physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, EMDR, breathwork, meditation, yoga…

I could go on forever.

They’ve invested time, money, and so much energy into feeling better.

And now, they’re exhausted.

Not just from the pain itself, but from getting their hopes up every time something seems to help, only to find themselves right back where they started weeks or months later.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about body mapping. 🙋‍♀️

I’ve watched people who tried everything finally start to understand their bodies differently.

Instead of chasing the latest symptom or trying harder to “fix” the part that hurts, we get curious about the patterns their nervous system has been carrying underneath it all.

That shift opens up possibilities they genuinely didn’t know were still available to them.

What you’re experiencing is real, but you CAN change the patterns keeping you stuck there.

Have you ever wondered why slowing down feels so uncomfortable?

For a lot of people, it has very little to do with motivation or productivity.

(As if we have no value unless we are producing!)

At some point, “pushing through” became more than an unconscious habit.

It became the way your nervous system learned to respond when something felt uncertain or overwhelming.

Maybe slowing down meant falling behind.

Maybe asking for help didn’t feel like an option.

Maybe your worth became tied to how much you could accomplish, how dependable you were, or how well you held everything together.

Those experiences shape patterns.

And over time, those patterns become your nervous system’s default response.

That’s why telling yourself to “rest more” or “stop overworking” isn’t always enough.

At Prism, we use body mapping and movement to create opportunities for your nervous system to practice a different response—one that isn’t rooted in survival alone.

That doesn’t happen overnight.

But little by little, people start noticing they don’t feel the same need to brace, override, or push through every challenge that comes their way.

And that’s where lasting change begins.

There’s a reason nothing has worked…yet.

And it’s not because you haven’t done enough or your body is “broken.”

We know how exhausting it is to keep searching for answers.

Many of the people who come to Prism have already tried physical therapy, stretching, yoga, mindset work, stress management, or countless other approaches.

Sometimes those things helped for a while. Sometimes they didn’t.

Either way, they were still left wondering:

“Why do I keep ending up back here?” 😓

At Prism, we look beyond the symptom itself.

Through body mapping and intentional movement, we help you better understand the nervous system patterns that may be contributing to recurring pain, stress, illness, or burnout.

As your nervous system receives new information, it has the opportunity to respond in new ways.

Over time, that can change the way you experience your body. Some describe it as feeling like you’re finally on the same team with your body. Others describe it feeling like they and their body are the same thing.

Either way, lasting change doesn’t come from chasing symptoms, but by understanding the patterns hiding underneath them.

If this resonates, we’d love to help you find the right place to start.

Every practice has a reason for existing. This is ours ⤵️

After tearing her meniscus, Amy followed the treatment plan she’d been given.

But instead of improving, her symptoms only got worse.

That experience led her to body mapping and a completely different way of understanding movement, pain, and the nervous system.

What started as a search for answers became the foundation of Prism Movement Studio.

Today, we help people who feel stuck in recurring patterns of chronic pain, illness, burnout, or stress understand what may be happening underneath those symptoms.

Then, we help them create lasting change at the source.

If that sounds like you, know that it doesn’t have to be this way.

Your body isn’t broken.

With the right support, real change IS possible.

Whether you join us here in Portland (we’re in the Pearl District!) or online from anywhere, we’d love to help you experience the work for yourself.
