🥾 100 Mile Wilderness Ridge Runner Pack-Out!

Today, we packed out our 100 Mile Wilderness ridge runner Kevin Takash*ta-Bynum after another successful season of supporting hikers along the Appalachian Trail. We’re incredibly grateful to our ridge runners for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to keeping hikers safe, informed, and prepared in Maine’s rugged wilderness!

👏 Thank you for another wonderful season on the trail—and a special thank you to current MATC President Janice Clain for the delicious chocolate chip cookies 😊

What a beautiful day for this great event! 🍂t🌲☀

This past weekend, Somerset Woods Trustees partnered up with the MATC | Maine Appalachian Trail Club, Skowhegan Outdoors, and Somerset Public Health to host a two-day “Trails 101” training for both the community and local students.

Community day participants got to tour the MATC Trails Center in Skowhegan and learned the basics of trail terminology and layout through a hands-on field session at Malbon Woods.

🛠️ Volunteers Needed to Help Close Out the Season at the Maine Trail Center!
MATC’s Maine Trail Crew Committee is looking for volunteers October 22–24, from 9 AM–3 PM, to help clean and refurbish tools, clean buildings and bunkhouses, and prepare appliances and plumbing for winter.
📍 Where: Maine Trail Center, Malbon Mills Road, Skowhegan
⏰ When: October 22, 23 & 24 (any amount of time helps!)

A great day on trail with partners that make preserving and protecting the Maine A.T. possible! Thank you MATC | Maine Appalachian Trail Club for organizing this wonderful trip.

Many thanks to the PHS Outdoor Club for a fantastic late-September work trip in the Bigelows! At the Safford Notch Side Trail and Campsite, 13 students and 4 teachers put on their work gloves and helped care for the Appalachian Trail. They trimmed back brush, maintained waterbars, blazed the trail, built bog bridges, dismantled an illegal fire pit, and improved earthen tent platforms. Along the way, students practiced outdoor skills—from building campfires and setting up tents to cooking outdoors. They enjoyed the fall foliage, mountain views, and star-filled nights immersing themselves in nature while helping care for our public lands. A shout out to MATC sawyer Steve Niles and Bigelow Ridgerunner Elliot Koeppel for lending a hand!
