LOGAN WATT STORMS FROM FIFTEENTH STARTING SPOT, TAKES LEAD ON FINAL LAP TO SCORE FIRST NASCAR MODIFIED WIN OF SEASON AND CAPTURE GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY NASCAR MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP
STEVE YOUNG WITHSTANDS LATE RACE FOUR CAR BATTLE TO GRAB FIRST NASCAR SPORTSMAN WIN IN FOUR SEASONS, SVEN OLSON & LUCAS MUTTER VINTAGE WINNERS
JOE TOTH TOPS THREE DRIVER BATTLE TO CAPTURE GRANDVIEW SPORTSMAN TITLE
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. – On an evening of incredibly intense and highly competitive racing action, with thrilling racing from start to finish, it was certainly a night that will be remembered for a long time to come Saturday night at Grandview Speedway!
With three drivers entering the Championship night action with a shot to win the track title, it was Logan Watt of Boyertown, Pa. who had some circumstances fall his way while creating the rest himself, as he stormed forward from his fifteenth starting position, catching and passing race leader Jon Kellner of Lansdale, Pa. coming to the white flag, then racing home to not only the thrilling feature win, but also putting an exclamation point on the night by winning the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Modified Track Championship!
Eddie Strada of Lake Ariel, Pa. entered the night as the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Modified point leader only to be involved in a crash in his heat race, running the consolation and not qualifying, using a provisional to start the feature, then motoring forward from twenty-ninth starting spot to finish sixteenth, which was not enough to overcome the spectacular drive by Watt to the win.
Jeff Strunk was also in the hunt for the point title entering the night, getting involved in a heat race skirmish and getting a flat tire, pitting and still qualifying, starting fourteenth in the feature and storming up to ninth position ahead of the other two, only to lose a drive shaft on lap thirteen and dropping from the feature event.
Steve Young of Collegeville, Pa. was able to win out on a late race battle for the win, fighting off the repeated challenges of Nick Van Wickle of Springfield, N.J., Kenny Gilmore of Fleetwood, Pa., and TJ Mayberry of Sellersville, Pa. to pick up his first feature victory in four years in the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman main event.
Three drivers had a chance to win the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman title entering the final point night, with Joe Toth of Upper Makefield, Pa. starting fifteenth and racing home to a seventh place finish, staying ahead of both Addison Meitzler of Kutztown, Pa. and Colin Cox of Perkasie, Pa. to capture his first ever Grandview Speedway Track Championship.
The Outlaw Racing Series Vintage cars were also in action, with Sven Olson and Lucas Mutter scoring the in class Modified & Sportsman victories in their 15-lap main event.
The winners received bonus money (Modified $300, Sportsman $200) from T.P. Trailers and Truck Equipment of Limerick, Pa., sponsors of the two divisions at Grandview Speedway in a race program run under the NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts banner.
There was so much intense racing all throughout the entire 30-lap T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Modified feature that fans did not know where to watch, with Bobby Trapper Sr. of Scranton, Pa. taking the early lead, under pressure from Ryan Beltz of Barto, Pa. and Jon Kellner.
By lap six another battle was happening behind the top three between Kenny Bock of Oley, Pa., Mike Lisowski of Minersville, Pa., Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., Craig Whitmoyer of Hamburg, Pa., and Ryan Grim of Laureys Station, Pa. for top ten positions.
By lap ten Kellner caught Trapper Sr. and began a battle for the top spot, with Kellner moving past Trapper Sr. entering turn one after scoring lap twelve to become the new leader.
Jeff Strunk, who was steadily moving forward in the early stages, stopped on the track on lap thirteen drawing the only caution of the race, ending his night way too early and his hopes for a possible point title.
Logan Watt meanwhile, was deep in the pack in the early stages of the race, being part of a huge multi-car race for positions sitting in twelfth position by lap ten and advancing to eighth by lap thirteen.
Kellner would continue to lead on the lap thirteen restart, pulling out to a comfortable lead, with Trapper Sr. and Lisowski battling for second, while Howard, Bock a steadily advancing Louden Reimert of Oley, Pa., Watt, Craig Von Dohren of Oley, Pa. Whitmoyer, and Jared Umbenhauer of Richland, Pa. hooked up in an incredible battle for the top ten positions.
Watt would sweep to the top lane of the track during the extended stretch of green flag racing, moving into seventh by lap fifteen, sixth on lap seventeen, and into fifth spot by lap twenty.
With Trapper Sr. leading and Lisowski in pursuit in second, Watt would hook up in a battle for the top five spots, moving past Howard for fourth on lap twenty-one, then sweeping around Trapper Sr. for third on lap twenty-four, and moving past Lisowski for second with just five laps to go.
At this point Kellner had nearly a straightaway lead on Watt, who would erase the gap in just three laps, catching Kellner with two laps to go and challenge for the lead.
Watt would make the pass on Kellner for the lead on the outside lane going down the back straight away coming around for the white flag, then pulled out to a small advantage in the final lap to score the improbable and thrilling feature win, his first of the season and third career Grandview Speedway NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts Modified feature win.
Strada meanwhile, tried to keep his title hopes alive after leading the points since the second event of the year, by steadily working his way forward from twenty-ninth starting spot, but using a back-up car following the heat race crash, he was not able to put on one of his patented and thrilling drives through the field to stay close enough to Watt to hold the point lead, eventually ending up in sixteenth position, needing to finish in eighth spot if Watt would win the race which he did accomplish with the late race heroics.
At the checkered Watt scored the win followed by Jon Kellner and Mike Lisowski for their best runs of the year, Louden Reimert, Craig Von Dohren, Jared Umbenhauer, Duane Howard, Bobby Trapper Sr., Jax Yohn of Woodchoppertown, Pa., and Craig Whitmoyer.
Qualifying heats for the 42 cars on hand were won by Duane Howard, Mike Lisowski, Jax Yohn and Jon Kellner while Chris Esposito of Telford, Pa. and Mike Gular of Harleysville, Pa. won the consolations.
The 25-lap T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman feature was just as wildly competitive and exciting as the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Modified feature, with a few more cautions and restarts sprinkled in during the race.
Steve Young would start on the pole position and lead every lap to the finish, but endured numerous different challengers during the main event, with Kaitlyn Bailey of Alburtis, Pa., Kenny Gilmore, and Shannon Slaughter of Lititz, Pa. pressuring him early.
Following a lap nine restart, Young would pull out to a small advantage while Bailey and Gilmore would be joined by Nick Van Wickle and Brad Brightbill of Sinking Spring, Pa. in a great battle for second position, while Toth would still be in fifteenth spot where he started, with point title contenders Addison Meitzler already up to seventeenth from twenty-fourth starting spot, and Colin Cox up to twentieth spot after starting in twenty-fifth position.
Van Wickle was steadily moving forward from twelfth starting spot, reaching third by the half-way mark to join the battle up front, before a lap fourteen caution would really heat things up.
On the restart Young would remain in the lead but had serious pressure on him, as a seven car race for the lead developed, with Gilmore, Van Wickle, Brightbill, TJ Mayberry, fourteenth starting Bryce Bashore of Bethel, Pa., and Bailey were all racing in a tight pack together up front challenging for the top spot.
By lap fifteen, Toth would get untracked and reach seventh, with Meitzler in eleventh, and Cox in fifteenth, still advancing in their quest to win the point title.
With continuous great racing throughout the field, a final caution on lap eighteen would set up the final frantic laps of the feature, with a now four car race for the lead under a blanket between Young, Van Wickle, Gilmore and Mayberry, with Young in the low groove with Van Wickle and Gilmore running the high lane trying to sweep around both of them, while Mayberry was right behind waiting for his chance to advance.
Van Wickle and Gilmore threw everything they had at Young in the final frantic laps, but Young held firm in the top spot to the checkered, and won by little more than a car’s length at the line.
At the wave of Starter Ray Kemp’s checkered flag, it was Steve Young scoring his first win of the season, and fourth career NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts Grandview feature win, followed by Nick Van Wickle for his best career Grandview run, Kenny Gilmore, TJ Mayberry for his best run, late charging Bryce Bashore, Brad Brightbill, Joe Toth, Addison Meitzler, Dakota Kohler of Kutztown, Pa., and Kaitlyn Bailey.
Toth ended his feature run in seventh position to score his first ever Grandview Speedway T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment Sportsman point Championship in his first season as a track regular, while Meitzler picked up the Hard Charger award storming forward sixteen positions to finish eighth, but needed to be eight positions ahead of Toth to have a shot at winning the tile, while contender Cox finished in fifteenth spot, not enough to give him a chance to win his second consecutive point title.
Qualifying heats for the 43 cars on hand were won by Kenny Gilmore, Steve Young, Steve Hughes of Coopersburg, Pa., and Gavyn Krupp of Barto, Pa. while Nate Brinker of Allentown, Pa. and Matthew Laubach of Quakertown, Pa. won the consolations.
Sven Olson survived a late race restart and a lead swapping dual in the final two laps with Scott Schaffer, to score the win in the 15-lap Outlaw Racing Series Vintage main event over Schaffer, Junior Mikosz, Kevin Kuser, Todd Miller, and Lucas Mutter, who was the first Sportsman car across the finish line to score the in class win.
Next on the schedule, Grandview Speedway will be presenting the 56th annual Freedom 76 weekend of racing, with the two biggest race events of the season next weekend!
The Freedom 76 weekend begins on Friday, September 18 with the 13th annual Freedom 38 Sportsman Championship. The race program will again follow the Freedom 76 race format with qualifying heats, consolations, Roy Miller II of Keller Williams Real Estate $500 to win cash dash, and the Patriot 20 all leading up to the 38-lap Championship feature event, plus practice time for 358 Modified drivers wishing to participate in the Freedom 76.
Friday’s program will be known as Fans for Five Friday as the grandstand admission is just $5, while children ages 9 and under will be free of charge.
On Friday, pit gates open at 3 pm, with grandstand gates opening at 5:30 pm, drivers meeting at 5:30 pm, with the pill draw following the drivers meeting. Warmups are at 6:15 pm, and racing at 7:30 pm. Pit admission on Friday is $40, and no license is required. There is no rain date for the Friday event.
Racers are reminded that the Freedom 38 is open to regular Sportsman division drivers only (track or series), drivers who compete regularly in Modified division competition are not eligible to compete.
On Saturday, September 19, it will be the 56th annual Freedom 76 run in honor of Theresa Rogers for the T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment 358 Modifieds. The program includes qualifying heats, consolations, GT Radiator Repair $1000 to win cash dash, and the Schaeffer Motorsports Minuteman 20, all leading up to the 76-lap Championship main event paying $35,531 to win!
On Saturday pit gates open at 9 am, for car inspections, fans will be able to enter the Grandstand areas between 9 am, and 12 Noon to reserve seats with blankets, with grandstand ticket windows opening at 3 pm. Pill draw for position is at 4:30 pm, with the drivers meeting at 5 pm, warm-ups are at 6 pm, with racing starting at 7 pm.
Adult Grandstand tickets on Saturday will be $40, students 10-15 with ID are $20, while children ages 9 and under are admitted free of charge. Pit admission will be $45, and no license is required. There will be no advance tickets sold for this event, and the rain date is Saturday, September 26.
Those wishing to camp at the Speedway please note: Campers can enter the grounds in the fourth-turn area on Saturday, September 12 and remain there until the 19th. However, because there are no hookups, sleeping in the campers can only take place September 18-20.
