How To Last 30 Years (Or More) In Triathlon, From Athletes Doing Just That 07/18/2025

My multisport career lasted from 1982 to 2024, 43 years. I competed in a dozen countries, at least that many national championships and 3 world championships. The journey was wonderful. I never thought that I would retire from competing.

The first crack in that "never" wall was when I aged up to the last wave start in the Milkman Triathlon. I was a bit undone thinking that there were no older start waves, that this wave was it, it was the terminal wave. 🫣

The next crack in that wall was when one of my knees could not run anymore. My transition to swimming and cycling was easy and while I missed the group runs, I quickly decided that I really didn't miss running. I was fine with my new normal of walking with no pain and no limp.

The final crack in that never-retire-from-competition-wall came this year when I decided that I am content with coaching athletes and organizing events. I truly am grateful for my training and competition opportunities. Along the way, I've met some incredible people and developed great friendships.

You know what is most important about enjoying multisport? Family, friends, people, training groups. Don't overlook the relationships that you can build while doing triathlons. You can keep those going into your retirement years.😍

The following article was just published in Triathlete Magazine about having a long triathlon career. Enjoy! -Perry

How To Last 30 Years (Or More) In Triathlon, From Athletes Doing Just That Triathletes who have been racing for decades share how to keep competing as you age. The consistent theme: Have fun.
