From the beginning days of river rafting, in the middle part of last century, Western River Expeditions has been a pioneer for the rafting industry. For example, the first self-bailing boat floors used on the exploratory trips in Mexico's now lost rivers (El Sumidero, and Rio Grijalva) in 1962, or the creation of the J-Rig - designed specifically for the safest and best ride over the large waves of the Grand Canyon. Many other industry devices from modern toilet boxes and ingenious foot-action hand-wash systems used today were spear-headed by Western and approved as the standard by the Park Service as needed. But for all the contraptions and gizmos that make life better on the river, we've never forgotten what it's really all about - helping others experience life by canyon and river. Just that simple goal of sharing the rivers and canyons we love with as many people as possible continues to be our ultimate satisfaction and goal.

Camping on the river is a little different.

Imagine falling asleep beneath a sky full of stars, waking up surrounded by towering canyon walls, and having the river right outside your tent.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a “camper,” you might change your mind after a few nights out here.

Those days are long gone.

Steak, chicken, fresh sides, desserts, and full meals prepared right at camp. After a full day exploring the river, you might be surprised by just how good dinner can be.

Not with Western River Expeditions.

Some of our river adventures take you deep into the wilderness for multiple days, where the river becomes your road and camp changes every night.

Days filled with whitewater, side hikes, waterfalls and exploring. Nights filled with great food, campfires and sleeping under the stars.

It’s not just a day on the river. It’s a full-on adventure.

All commercial Grand Canyon river trips, including all Western River Expeditions trips, are operating on schedule and our guests and guides are all safe and accounted for. While Phantom Ranch, Boat Beach, the North Kaibab Trail, and the Black and Silver Bridges remain closed following the flash flooding near Bright Angel Creek, the main stem of the Colorado River is open and all river operations are continuing without disruption.

The closures do not affect any Western River Expeditions trips. Immediately following the flood on the evening of August 29th, the National Park Service chose to temporarily close the Colorado River until they could assess that it was safe for river trips to proceed. The river reopened shortly after noon on the 30th.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy, and we’re deeply grateful to the National Park Service, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and all responders working around the clock on evacuation and search efforts.
