They say your dogs are a reflection of your own personality sooooo…. 😂

They 100% are my best friends.

Apparently, my toxic trait is knowing Border Collies are completely unhinged and still thinking, “Yep, that’s the one for me.” Every time.

Because why would I want a peaceful, uncomplicated life when I could be emotionally manipulated by a border collie? I wouldn’t have it any other way - they may be a lot, but they are the best.

Did you know you actually CAN access the world famous Antelope Canyon with your dog?

It is almost desert season so save this and follow along for more dog-friendly adventure ideas!

Typically you can only see this canyon by taking a Navajo tour but this dog-friendly paddle-in option is well worth the extra effort! The round-trip paddle can exhausting (especially with any wind) so I recommend setting aside a full day to enjoy this experience and make sure you have enough time for the paddle.

The adventure begins at Antelope Point Marina located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation area in Page, AZ. A National Park Pass /or entrance fee is required to access the marina. We rented kayak’s from Antelope Point rentals in the marina. They are dog friendly and have kayaks and SUP’s available for rent. Single kayaks were $50 for a full day rental, and double was $100 - and we definitely recommend making a reservation.

From the marina the paddle to the entry of the the slot canyon itself is about 3 miles (actual mileage will depend on water levels). It took us roughly 2-2.5 hours to get to where we could start hiking into the canyon. We did stop along the way to take a break and let the dogs swim and play.

Once you enter the canyon on foot you are able to hike in about two miles - the further in you go the more narrow the slot canyon becomes and there are a few obstacles you will need to be prepared for along the way - but nothing too unmanageable.

After you explore the canyon you can head back to your kayak and start your paddle back to the marina!! For us, the paddle back was a bit more daunting as the boats on the lake created a lot of waves and the wind was blowing right at us so keep this in mind if you go!

Welcome to Big McGee Lake in the Eastern Sierra!

This trail is no secret or hidden gem, its well known in all the local guide books and handout pamphlets for its spectacular fall colors, but a lot of people only go a short way in and turn around, however, it is so worth the extra effort to get up to the lake and even head up further to McGee Pass or tackle some surrounding summits!

A few things to know before you go:
* Trailhead: McGee Creek Trailhead, accessed from McGee Creek Road off Hwy 395
* Distance: ~14 miles round trip
* Elevation gain: ~2,800 ft
* Best time (imho): Fall for the golden aspens, cooler temperatures and NO MOSQUITOES
* Dog-friendly: Dogs are allowed, but must be under strict leash or voice control. This is also a popular route for packers and horses, so pack your Front Range leashes with traffic handles, and be prepared to keep your dog close when needed.
* Overnight: A wilderness permit is required for overnight trips so make sure to secure your permit before heading out. One of the best parts about backpacking in the Sierra is the permit system which ensures places like these are not overused.
* This is a high-country backpacking trip, so be prepared for you and your dog for changing weather, colder overnight temperatures and high elevation.
* ALWAYS practice LNT principles - if you don’t know what those are make sure you familiarize yourself with them before you go.
* The parking lot will fill up on weekends so arrive early to get a spot for overnight. �
Pepper wore her Ruffwear Palisades Overnight Pack with detachable saddlebags for this trip, which was perfect for carrying their food up! I removed the saddlebags for the hike down and whenever we stopped to let the dogs swim along the way.

We also brought their insulated Ruffwear Powder Hound vests to keep them warm once the sun went down and temperatures dropped. And, of course, we couldn’t forget their Ruffwear Hydro Plane frisbees! These are a must-have for any adventure involving water and we don’t leave home without them.

“And God said, I will send them without wings so that no one suspects they are angels.” 🙏

I fully believe that dogs are sent to us straight from God. Angels. Guides and protectors of our souls. No matter what your religion is or what you believe, I think it is safe to say, we all believe they are a blessing to us in this life.

I feel this way about every single one of my dogs. Each one has been so different from the others, with their own personality, their own way of loving me, and their own lessons to teach. Yet somehow, each one has helped me become a little more of who I was meant to be.

They each were sent to walk with me here for a little while, to help guide me quietly back to myself, to teach me empathy, unconditional love and loyalty, and to show me how to live and be present in a world full of distractions and, sadly, to teach us about letting go and learning to open our hearts and love again.

They each came into my life to complete a mission - to deliver love. And each one has succeeded.

They read the silence between our words, they feel the tears we don’t cry, and they celebrate the simple joys we often barely notice. Where we use language, dogs use love. When they look at us, they feel us.

A world without them, for me, would be empty.

Dog people know.

We know how much of our lives our dogs quietly hold. Not just the big moments, but the thousands of little ones that would mean almost nothing to anyone else.

They’re there for the parts nobody sees. The mornings when getting out of bed feels hardr than it should, the long days, the little victories and the moments we laugh or cry for no real reason. They know our routines and our moods. They know when to be closer than usual. They notice when something is off before we’ve even said a word.

They make life feel full by just being them.

So, thank you to all the dogs.

To the ones who have sat beside someone through heartbreak. The ones who stayed close through grief, loneliness, fear and change. The ones who give a child their first best friend, the ones who give people a family before they ever had children, or became the only children they ever chose to have (🙋‍♀️), and the ones that give an older person a reason to get up each morning.

Thank you to every dog who has quietly helped someone put themselves back together.

And thank you for all the love you give without ever asking us to explain ourselves first. For staying. For listening. For making us laugh when we forgot how. For finding the softest and hardest parts of us and loving them without question.

We get to spend a little piece of our lives with you, and somehow, that little piece becomes one of the most important parts of who we are.

Maybe that’s why dogs feel less like something we’re lucky enough to have and more like something life gives us when we need it most.

They are comfort when we need it, joy when we’ve forgotten how to find it and a kind of love that never asks for anything in return.

And honestly, when you look at a life filled with dogs, it’s hard to imagine there’s much better than that.
