The journey to greatness, sorta
Once upon a time in land down under. There was a man who sat with wonder. And Sometimes the journey is the most exciting part of getting to your destination.
Circa 2019 a New Zealand (Kiwi) idea was borne to achieve a land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the J-PS class. J is the engine size (508cc to 753cc) and PS is Production Supercharged. Not many cars fit into this category, and those that fit are foreign. The Mitsubishi 660 I-Car fits the category and it was available in New Zealand. After modifications to comply with SCTA rules, an overseas shipment and a mission for speedweek 2019 the car, driver and crew arrived in the USA only to be defeated by Mother Nature- Rain.
The car found itself in a storage unit close to Bonneville with hopes of completing the mission. Fast forward to 2025 and a realization of “life gets in the way”. The car changed hands to a US consortium of land speed racers who will attempt to complete this story. Resurrected from storage purgatory the consortium has rebranded the J-PS under the name “Three Schmucks Racing”. Same car, same record new owners, same mission.
The car has been through tech and primary driver (me) bailout complete. We wait for course conditions to go racing honoring the mantra “ slowest kiwi 🥝 “ still stenciled on the rear car bumper.

Today in history 1935 Sir Malcom Campbell became the first person to drive a vehicle over 300 mph, and it was done on the Bonneville Salt flats

To reach higher speeds, Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird LSR car was modified with a 2,500 hp Rolls-Royce R engine. With new bodywork, the car surpassed 300 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935.

Team JCB brought a Hydrogen powered streamliner to speedweek. They broke the AA (dual engine) Blown Gas Streamliner (BGS) by 20 mph and achieved a record of 268.347 mph.
The pilot of the vehicle, Andy Green, is the fastest man on earth holding a 763.035mph (Mach 1.05) land speed record. All vehicles must pass a technical inspection and all new vehicles must have the operator perform a bailout. I was part of the technical team who conducted the bailout and performed the technical inspection.
My claim to fame “I bailed out Andy Green.

My good friend Bill Daily, Land Speed Racers (LSR) club president and fellow land speed racer set a new land speed record of 150.393 mph in the K (500 cc) Blown Fuel Lakester (BFL). The previous record of 140.523 mph was set in August 2009. Yours truly was honored to help with starting line preparation and drive the push truck.

The prep for Bonneville Speedweek 2026 continues. Few upgrades to the #834 STR.
1. Engine swap from El Mirage to Bonneville.
2. Clean up a little engine plumbing spaghetti from a previous dyno session on Bonneville engine.
3. Paint touch up on rear of car, buffing and polish next week
4. Some assembly required.
