Your core is not something you turn on and off. It should stay gently engaged throughout the entire movement. When it drops out, everything else compensates.

By using a full and relaxed breath you will engage your core without gripping or tensing.

When your lower back lifts off the mat without intention, your core is not doing its job. This can put unnecessary strain on your spine and reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.

Think about keeping a neutral spine or gently pressing your lower back down when needed. Engage your abs before you move.
