Teaching children is about so much more than teaching them to dance!

I love watching students gradually become more comfortable expressing themselves, asking questions, trying new things, and taking ownership of their learning.

These moments from my recent visit to our Maryland classes are a little glimpse into that process. Every student brings something different to class, and it’s a joy to help them discover what they’re capable of.

There’s more to adavu practice than repetition!

During a recent review, we worked on refining our movements, paying attention to alignment, timing, and clarity.

We also experimented with formations, giving students an opportunity to see how the same adavus can be used in different ways when dancing together.

It’s a fun way to bring creativity into foundational practice while continuing to strengthen technique.

A little glimpse into our Thursday evening adult Bharatanatyam class in Santa Clara!

Our adult classes bring together dancers with different backgrounds and experiences. Some are discovering Bharatanatyam for the first time, while others are finding their way back to dance after years away.

It’s been wonderful seeing this little community take shape, with everyone learning, challenging themselves, and enjoying the process together.

Looking for a Bharatanatyam class for your child in Santa Clara? ✨

Bharatanatyam asks children to do a lot at once: listen to rhythm, coordinate the body, remember sequences, pay attention to detail, and keep trying when something doesn’t come immediately.

That’s part of what makes the learning so valuable. ❤️

In class, we work on strong foundations in posture, rhythm, coordination, technique, and confidence, while giving students the time and space to learn at their own pace.

Our children’s Bharatanatyam classes are underway in Santa Clara, and new students are welcome.

A few Arangetram moments for Amara’s birthday ❤️

An Arangetram captures so much more than one performance. It holds years of repetition, corrections, stamina-building, musicality, expression, nerves, confidence, and slowly learning how to make the dancing feel like your own.

Looking back at these photos today, I’m reminded of how much goes into reaching that stage — and how much of the journey happens long before the audience ever sees it.

Happy birthday, Amara. ❤️ So glad we get to celebrate you with some of these moments from such a special milestone.

Learning alongside other people is such a big part of dance training.

Everyone is working on something different, everyone notices different details, and somehow the room gets better because of it.

You learn from your own corrections, from watching someone else work through theirs, and from figuring out how to keep going even when the person next to you is learning at a different pace.

That shared process is such a big part of class. ❤️

Sometimes class looks like this: keep going, keep practicing, and I’ll keep walking around fixing the details as we go 😄

With thattadavus, I’m watching for all the little things that can start to slip once students get tired — especially hand position, arm placement, and whether the shape stays clear while they keep moving.

Not every correction needs a full stop. Sometimes the goal is to hear it, adjust it, and keep powering through.

That’s part of building both technique and stamina over time. ❤️

Then vs. now ❤️

The first photo is from one of Arya’s early performances with me. The second is from a sanchaari in her Arangetram.

Over the years, I’ve watched her abhinaya become more confident, nuanced, and specific.

Expression isn’t just about making a face or showing an emotion clearly. It comes from understanding the character, the situation, the intention behind the movement, and allowing all of that to come through naturally.

During the process of preparing for her Arangetram, that became especially clear. Her abhinaya started to feel more lived-in, more detailed, and much more her own.

Seeing that shift over time has been really meaningful. ❤️
