When did you first start CrossFitting?
I first started Crossfit in October of 2020.
When did you first start training at Papago?
I started training with Papago also in October of 2020. Prior to my current training, high school was the only
other time I worked out.
Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD:
While I haven’t yet mastered this skill, I enjoy learning/developing my hand stand walks. It is very difficult for
sure but, I like knowing that I one day I will be strong enough to accomplish this goal.
Least Favorite skill/WOD:
FRAN is by far my least favorite of the WOD’s. Thrusters seem to be my arch nemesis.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I come from virtually no fitness background. When I first started Crossfit I must admit I was overwhelmed. The
last time I truly worked out so intensely was in my younger years. Though through perseverance I continue to
show up and do the work.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did
it feel?
My friend and co-worker (Cathy Parker) continued to come into the office full of joy, confidence, excitement,
and overall elation. I thought to myself, I want that too. I asked her “what was she doing differently”, she said

Crossfit! I said okay, no thanks. She eventually convinced me to make an appointment with Coach Chris and I
nearly died during the fitness test. But I remember the first thing Coach Chris said to me was listen to your
body. It wasn’t about being the best athlete at Papago. It was about being the best version of myself. I came
back and the first WOD was “The Longest Mile”. Fitting because it seemed to go on forever, but I got through
it. I felt amazing knowing that I pushed myself further than I had in a very long time.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?
I have definitely lost more than a few inches off of my waist. And I am more conscience of what I eat and drink.
Which ultimately helps me through the workouts and everyday life. In total I have lost 20 lbs since October of
2020.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:
My interactions with all of the coaches are always a pleasure. There is no judgment, shame, or guilt for where
your skill level is when training. Also, I love the support that I receive from the other members. Cheering each
other on to push through your limits and complete a WOD really helps.
Any advice for people just getting started?
Go for it! Don’t wait or continue to let excuses halt or hinder your decision to experience the best of what you
can do. You don’t know, until you know!
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?
I love hanging out with friends and family outside of the gym. Relaxing, joking, and laughing in a safe and
judgement free environment is the best medicine for me.

Congratulations Papago CrossFit 2021 January Member of the Month!
Name: Sharon
Age:33
Hometown: Phoenix, AZ

1) Occupation:

I work for the Department of Economic Security as a lead for the Family Assistance Administration but soon will be working for the client liaison/special assistance unit. :)

2)When did you first start taking yoga?

I started yoga around March 2019.

3) When did you first start training at Papago?

Around September of this year.(2020)

4) Favorite Yoga Pose:

There are so many that I find so helpful but lately because I sit a lot at work I find that pigeon pose feels so good afterward for my lower back and hips.

5) Least Favorite yoga pose:
I probably would have to echo what a lot of people say which is boat pose haha.

6) Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I didn’t play organized sports but I liked the activities in PE. After that I honestly didn’t see the importance of fitness and just had a lot of excuses for not joining a gym and exercising. But then after having health issues related to stress and anxiety, I turned to cardio and then yoga.

7) How did you first get exposed to Papago CrossFit? Take us back to your first class… what was it, and how did it feel?

I started yoga at Ironwood Yoga and my first ever class was with Megan and I regularly took her foundations class. I wanted to keep practicing yoga in person to go along with the virtual yoga environment that Ironwood has now so I came to Papago to keep practicing with her. I think the one thing from the first class was that it was the first time I had practiced in person at a studio in months and seen so many people from Ironwood that I hadn’t seen since March when the shutdowns happened. It was just an amazing feeling to be back on my mat at a studio. I’m sure that at some point in the class Megan told me to relax my trap muscles lol.

8) What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting yoga?

It’s seriously been an amazing journey for me. I found myself in this position around October 2018 where I had zero control over my stress and anxiety, but I also wasn’t paying that much attention to how it was affecting my body, basically shrugging it off. So when I ended up at the doctor and found out that my heart rate was extremely high. It was my cardiologist who told me that I needed to do yoga at my follow up visit after discussing the possibility of two heart surgeries to lower my heart rate. Yoga has seriously helped me reduce my stress and anxiety tremendously and my heart rate is right where my cardiologist was wanting it and rarely goes higher than normal now. On top of that, I feel so much stronger and it’s even helped me to manage inflammation/pain from wrist tendonitis. I feel a huge difference if I don’t practice both mentally and physically.

9) Please share with us any favorite Papago CrossFit moments:

Classes are always so random with the discussions that go on like Saturday’s serial killer discussion lol. I love the humor that Megan and Zara bring to class.

10) Any advice for people just getting started?

Just keep up with your practice because we all come in as a beginner and have to learn poses and yoga’s just too amazing to give up. And Megan and Zara are always nice and patient as you learn and available to assist with modifications.

11) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?

I love books and reading. I really enjoy exploring different events and places and have always enjoyed photography. I also spend time with my spoiled dog Snickers (corgi mix). I have been involved in volunteer work for the Homeless ID Project prior to the pandemic which prompted more of an interest in advocacy for the homeless crisis in Arizona.

When did you first start CrossFitting? :

2016 i went to my first CrossFit class.

When did you first start training at Papago?

July 2020

Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD:

anything Kipping i really enjoy.

Least Favorite skill/WOD:
definitely burpees and running

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

i grew up playing sports. Started with t-ball. Than soccer in grade school. Then I went to my very first basketball summer league at 12. It was a summer camp, we went to a town called linking lol “licking camp” . I fell in love with basketball and then tried out for season ball in jr high. I never had magically great skills, however I loved the game and the competition. I knew with practice I could really polish my skills. My coach encouraged me to try out for track in 7th grade as well. So i did and i went to all the stations haha, it was like a field day to see what I’d do best in. Long jump. Long distance. Sprinting, hurdles. Pole Vaulting. Or throwing shotput and discus. I ended up with shotput and was taught the basics and kept trying out every year after that. My freshman year of high school I didn’t make the basketball team, I was super bummed. I told My friend from track (Annie , she swam for the school). Annie was like , just come try out for swim!! I made the team an fell for competitive swimming. It’s a unique sport! i was best at the 500 and 50 freestyle. I Moved schools the next year and played basketball instead of swim for the remaining years of high school.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

OH MAN! The story goes like this. It was the first day at track practice my junior year. This really tall nice girl had super defined muscles and I went up to her an told her, she said “thank you! Me an my mom actually go to this gym called leave time. It’s CrossFit have you heard of it?” and i was like no tell me more! Then she invited me to go with them one day. We started with 400m rowing, then when the wod came we did wall balls , burpees and they had me modify the bar work i cant remember what the third thing was. But I DIED!!!! My friend was like how’d you like it haha , i was cherry red in the face an so sick to my stomic. I said, that worked MEOUT! Haha. We kept going back every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?

Working out with CrossFit and having a balanced diet, iv seen a total 360 on my health. I feel I get a balanced workout in. And its helped with prior injuries. I highly prefer not to take any substances other than vitamins or natural remedies to heal. So our workouts strengthen my muscles giving me more support on the bones. overall I'm in the best shape when I’m working out with CrossFit and eating correctly. That’s priceless to me because our bodies are our vehicles. We will either pay now in hard work or pay later in bad health.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:

first time learning how to press overhead I wouldn't clear my head fast enough and learned the hard way that a bar forcefully punching your chin up, biting your tongue, Or teeth hitting really hard. SUCKS!! HAHA

Any advice for people just getting started?

I really liked what Tim said. Just make a decision to go. Create a routine that will work with your schedule. Eliminate all excuses and just go. My motto was always “ just show up” cause once i get to the gym i won't go home, and I’m ALWAYS so grateful i made the decision to get up and go. Prioritize Your health. In and out of the gym.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?

I love art, singing. Sand volleyball with friends. Reading books that i can learn from. Writing personal journal entries. I like getting out and serving our community in different ways. I like to try new things! :)

Name:

Age:
50

Hometown:

Occupation:

When did you first start CrossFitting?
2012. I was biking and wanted to add some variety to my workouts.

When did you first start training at Papago?
June of 2020

Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD:
Kettlebell; anything on the pull up bar.

Least Favorite skill/WOD:

Pistols, my knees are getting too old

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I heard that CrossFit was a hard, varied activity, that was fun. I took a class and was hooked by the simplicity of the workouts as well as the variety.
I had not, and have not ever been as sore as I was during my first two weeks of starting Crossfit. Amazing the pain that I felt in areas I did not even know I had muscles.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?

My upper body has become more defined. I work out in the morning. It creates a feeling of accomplishment. I will not do anything as difficult the entire day as what I did first
thing in the morning, the WOD

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:

The strength and endurance it has given me to participate in marathons and triathalons.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Number one item is just getting to the gym. Set a schedule and just stay with it. Just get in the door and start the workout. Something productive will happen. If you attend consistently you WILL see a change in your
body composition.

What
are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym? I follow all sports by my college, The Texas Longhorns as well as the Pittsburgh sports teams

Papago Crossfit February Member of the Month!
Name: Casey Sedillo

Age: 27

Hometown: Farmington, New Mexico

Occupation: Medical Student

When did you start CrossFitting?
I started CrossFit in 2016, which is also when I started training at Papago CrossFit.

Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD:
I really enjoy anything with a barbell (unless it’s thrusters...ew). I also love partner workouts.

Least Favorite skill/WOD:
This is an easy answer—lunges.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I grew up watching my parents play volleyball. Following in their footsteps, I started playing volleyball at age 11. I’ve kept it up ever since, though less now that I’m back in school. Once life started keeping me off the court, I discovered weightlifting and fell in love.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I started weightlifting in college and a few of my friends offered to teach me to Olympic lift. I wanted to learn from a coach with a bit more experience, so I started looking at CrossFit gyms.
My first WOD was Angie (100 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats). I don’t think I’d ever done a workout that challenged me like that before. It was a lot of fun, but it hurt so bad the next day.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?
Having an outlet at the gym has been food for me, both mentally and physically. I’ve learned to love my body for what it can do, rather than for just how it looks. It’s been great to watch my strength and endurance grow, too. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in the last couple of years.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:
The group celebration after someone hits a PR is one of the coolest feelings. I also really enjoy the feeling of the Open. It’s a fun time for the community to come together and celebrate one another’s accomplishments. The community and the friends I’ve made have definitely been the best part of this journey.

Any advice for people just getting started?
Be patient with yourself and your body. You’re learning what you're capable of as you’re getting started. You’re also learning how to move in new ways—sometimes with a barbell in your hands. We were all there once!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?
I really enjoy cooking and I’m not too terrible at it. I’ve also taken up gardening. I’ve got a few tomato plants growing on my balcony and they’re doing relatively well, so I count that as a win

01/07/2020

For January we chose an amazing story to inspire all those who might think what we do at Papago CrossFit is too difficult. Lisa has something to say about that. Say hello to Papago CrossFit's Member of the Month:

Name: Lisa Ward

Age: 53

Hometown: Clarendon Hills, IL

Occupation: Sr. Product Specialist for electronic components distributor

When did you first start CrossFitting? June 2018.

When did you first start training at Papago? June 2018.

Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD: Probably body armor workouts, using just the weight of your body.

Least Favorite skill/WOD: Running. But I am getting better!

Tell us about your sports & fitness background: No sports or fitness background to speak of. Most of my life, I was obese. Started WW in 2014, lost 135 lbs and have maintained that loss for 3.5 years now. I started an active lifestyle in 2015 about a year after I started losing weight on Weight Watchers. Yoga, DVD workouts and walking were my activities, initially.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? I met Megan when she started teaching at Ironwood, came to a yin and books event at Papago Crossfit, and talked to Natasha about crossfit, the pros and cons. Had my fitness evaluation with Chris shortly after that, and then my first WOD. Scary as heck! But I wanted to challenge myself, go out of my comfort zone. Boy did I ever! I don't recall my first WOD but I do know it was difficult, and I finished! I was grateful that Chris allowed me to row instead of run at the beginning. I was dead last on everything, but kept coming back because it's not about my time or being competitive, it was about FINISHING and being proud of conquering each workout. I also kept coming back because of the community feel, the people are what make this experience great for me.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? My muscle tone has greatly improved, I am stronger every day. I am progressing at my pace, and am happy with my progress.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments: My favorite moments are with the people at the gym. Wonderful, enthusiastic, friendly, people. Coaches are awesome! Chris knows what I can do, what I'm capable of, and pushes me when I need it. Grant plays some great music during class, and gives 100% when he coaches and when he attends class. Kim is beyond wonderful. Patient, kind and the main reason I keep coming to Crossfit Fundamentals on Saturday mornings! Alyssa and Cathy are so talented and strong, inspiring really. I learn something from everyone there, even fellow classmates. I can't forget Megan my yoga teacher, who always challenges me. Zara is awesome, so happy to have her as a teacher as well.

Any advice for people just getting started? Just try it. Come to your first class. Know that everything is scale-able! You do you. You don't have to be as fast or lift as heavy as those around you. Your journey. Your progress. No judgement! Just keep coming, have fun.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym? Shopping, hanging with my dogs, Penny (terrier/chihuahua mix) and Jackson (chihuahua). Love spending time with my grandkids as well. Hallmark Christmas movies!

Occupation: Registered Nurse in the ER, First Responder

When did you first start CrossFitting?
In February/March of 2019

When did you first start training at Papago?
In February/March of 2019

Favorite CrossFit skill/WOD:

I’ve always enjoyed the Saturday Fundamentals w/ Coach Kim, then going straight into Yoga. I also really enjoy trying a new skill that may be intimidating, or that I’m unfamiliar with. There is no better feeling than overcoming that, and having the movement of the skill just “click”.

Least Favorite skill/WOD:

Anything involving running or burpees. Because let’s be real, does anyone like burpees? (Though I always feel great after finishing them).

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

Grew up playing soccer and baseball. Throughout college stayed active going to the gym, but following college fell out of having a regular fitness routine for years. Started CrossFit this year to get back into having some more structure with my fitness.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

My first exposure to CrossFit was having a friend recommend it to me earlier in the year. After looking up gyms near me, Papago had great reviews and was super close to where I lived. I don’t necessarily remember my first WOD, but I do remember my initial consult/meet up with Coach Chris to do a baseline fitness test. I was so out of shape, that following the test I actually ended up throwing up (not my proudest moment)! I do remember really appreciating the support structure of the gym, and the constant encouragement from the other members and coaches.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?

I have noticed that I definitely feel stronger, and that I don’t seem to get winded as easy. I have had a couple times this year in which I’ve had back problems, and issues with a pinched sciatica nerve. I admit that I have used both of these as excuses to not attend a workout or two, but the exercise and stretching from the WODs and yoga has helped both injuries in the long run.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:

Anytime someone is finishing up a WOD in which other people may have already finished, everyone is always cheering that person on and congratulating them when they finish. Those are always my favorite moments, when the coaches and other members are really rallying behind someone to push just that last bit extra. Its a great sense of community.

Any advice for people just getting started?

I would say just go for it. I think people have this preconceived notion that you must have a strong fitness background, but everybody has to start somewhere. With the movements being scalable, it makes it approachable for just about anyone.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?

Hiking, camping, backpacking, traveling (whenever I can get time off work, and my wallet allows), attending concerts, trying out new bars/restaurants, and just generally spending quality time with good friends/family.

4) Least Favorite skill/WOD:

5) Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I played volleyball for 11 years and I ride dirt bikes with my family since I was little

6) How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

My volleyball team signed with crossfit for weekly training sessions. When our season was over, I decided to stay and continue working out there. When my team was doing the crossfit workouts, we only did conditioning drills. All I remember during my first workout was wanting to vomit after. The first time I went individually, one of the skills was climb the rope. I remember thinking there was absolutely no way I could climb that and my suspicions were correct. After my first workout, I was exhausted but I had so much fun.

7) What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?

My core strength and stamina have increased significantly, and the muscle in both my legs and arms have gained definition. I have also noticed I have gained weight...hopefully it’s muscle

8) Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:

My favorite moment was when I got my first kip pull up. I have been wanting to do it for years but I knew I needed to increase my strength first. When I accomplished my first one I felt very proud.

9) Any advice for people just getting started?

My advice would be to take your time and not get frustrated. It took me a long time to get where I am now and I know I still have a long way to go. I remember becoming frustrated when I did not have the basics down yet, therefore I couldn’t left heavy. But I continued to practice and practice and now I can start to add more weight.

10) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of the gym?

I’m in the nursing program so I mostly spend my time studying. When I have free time I will play volleyball with my friends or I enjoy going to the movies.
