As a youth coach and trainer with over 20 years of experience, I have dedicated my career to helping young basketball players develop their foundational skills. I really like the message in this one. 💛

We want our kids to walk into new situations feeling confident, but sometimes confidence comes AFTER they’ve had time to get comfortable.

This sponsored article fromCoach Deon Basketball shares a great perspective on how routines, predictability, and simply knowing what to expect can help our kids feel more secure (and eventually more confident).

Definitely worth a read as we head into a new school year, because this one goes way beyond sports.

What do school basketball coaches actually look for at tryouts?

It’s usually more than how many shots a player makes.

Coaches are watching how players compete, communicate, defend, make decisions, respond to mistakes, listen to instruction, and give effort when they don’t have the ball.

That’s why preparing for tryouts should be about more than working on a few basketball moves.

Players need opportunities to compete, make decisions under pressure, communicate with teammates, and learn how to respond when things don’t go perfectly.

Our September School Basketball Tryout Prep Clinic is built around helping players become more prepared and confident before they walk into tryouts.

Four Sundays. September 6, 13, 20 & 27.

We’ll share more over the next few weeks about what players can do to prepare.

Should a beginner start with basketball classes or join a league?

The answer depends on the child.

Classes are usually best when a player needs instruction, repetition, coordination, and confidence.

A beginner-friendly league may be appropriate when the child can follow directions, remain engaged after mistakes, and is ready to apply simple skills during games.

The goal is not to place a child in the most advanced environment.

The goal is to place the child where meaningful development can occur.
