With Kil-Kare Raceway’s recent change to “Darana Raceway,” one might wonder where the name “Kil-Kare” originated. Before becoming a raceway, Kil-Kare Park was a leisure resort with a pavilion, beach, and boating area situated on the Little Miami River. Established by the Dayton, Springfield, & Xenia Traction Co. in 1910, Kil-Kare Park became wildly popular. At its peak, picnic reservations had to be made at least a year in advance. “Kil-Kare” played on the phrase “Kill Care”, deriving from William Shakespeare’s play Much Ado about Nothing. In it, Claudio says to Benedict, “What, courage, man! What though care killed a cat? Thou hast mettle enough in thee to kill care.” And what better way to “kill care” than to spend the day at Kil-Kare?
