Do you avoid squats because your knees, hips, or ankles feel tight? Don't skip them—modify them.
Squats are one of the most important movement patterns we use every single day. Every time you sit down, stand up, pick something up, or get off the floor, you're performing a squat. That's why maintaining this movement is essential for aging gracefully.

In yoga, the traditional Malasana (Yogi Squat) is a wonderful pose—but it isn't the best starting point for everyone. Many people over 50 have limited ankle mobility, tight hips, knee discomfort, or balance challenges that make a full squat uncomfortable. The good news? You don't have to force the pose to receive the benefits. Try modifying your yoga squat by:
🧘 Placing a yoga block or folded blanket under your hips 🧘 Widening your stance 🧘 Turning your toes out slightly 🧘 Holding onto a chair, wall, or sturdy support for balance 🧘 Working only within a comfortable range of motion.
Remember, the goal isn't to achieve the deepest squat—it's to build a body that supports you for life. When your yoga practice honors your body's current abilities, you create lasting strength, better mobility, and greater freedom of movement.
Meet your body where it is today, and it will take you farther tomorrow.
I'd love to know—what makes squats most challenging for you? 🔹 Tight ankles 🔹 Tight hips 🔹 Knee discomfort ?

Yoga should fit your body—not the other way around.

Many people think they have to practice Ashtanga Yoga or Vinyasa Yoga exactly as it's traditionally taught. But unless you're training for a very specific lineage or athletic goal, the most beneficial practice is the one that supports your body.

That means making thoughtful modifications that honor your joints, mobility, strength, balance, and energy level. Modifying your practice doesn't mean you're doing "less" yoga. It means you're practicing smarter.

Whether you love Vinyasa Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga, the goal isn't to force your body into a pose—it's to create a practice that helps you feel stronger, more confident, and supports aging gracefully for years to come.

Remember, yoga was never meant to be about performing perfect poses. It's about cultivating awareness, breath, and a body that serves you well in everyday life.

💚 Listen to your body. Modify with intention. Progress with patience.

👇 Do you modify your yoga practice? Tell me YES in the comments if you've discovered that adapting poses has actually helped you feel stronger—not weaker.
