The Boston Gold Kings opened their 2026–27 Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) season with a heartbreaking 7–6 loss to the Salem Sasquatch on October 17 at Salem Icenter. Boston battled back from an early deficit to take a one-goal lead into the third period, but Salem’s late push spoiled the Gold Kings’ season opener.
Salem struck twice in the first period before Nick McNally got Boston on the board late in the frame, cutting the deficit to 2–1.
The Gold Kings came alive in the second period, scoring four goals to take control. Spencer Smith tied the game at 3–3, and McNally followed with his second goal of the night. Will Forte then put Boston ahead before Salem answered to tie it at 4–4. Matt Baldino restored Boston’s lead, sending the Gold Kings into the third period ahead 5–4.
Salem responded with three goals in the final period, including a power-play tally, to turn the game around. Smith scored his second of the night late in the third, with assists from Brian DeLisio and Baldino, bringing Boston within one at 7–6. Despite the late push, the Gold Kings couldn’t find the equalizer.
Boston finished with 30 shots on goal to Salem’s 32. The Gold Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Salem converted once on two opportunities. In net, Mike Cowell stopped 25 of 32 shots, while Salem’s goaltenders combined for 24 saves.
Despite the result, Boston showed plenty of offensive firepower, with McNally scoring twice and Smith adding two goals. The Gold Kings will look to build on that second-period surge as they continue their early-season schedule.
