FUN FACT FRIDAY: Moreno is first Polk State Soccer player to record hat trick in two years

As Polk State Soccer heads to Miami for an afternoon contest with yet another nationally ranked team, the Eagles have had some big scoring efforts -- both individually and as a team -- this season. In Polk State's four wins, the Eagles have scored 23 goals.

The only player to record a hat trick this season, however, is freshman Oriana Moreno. In a 7-1 win over Pasco-Hernando State College on Sept. 5, Moreno finished with three goals and an assist. Following her outstanding day, the freshman from Orlando was named the FCSAA Player of the Week.

Prior to Moreno, Polk State had not had a player record a hat trick in nearly two years. The most recent prior occasion came in October 2024 when Noemi Casique found the net three times in a 6-1 win over Millenia Atlantic University. Casique would go on to earn All-FCSAA honors. Moreno is currently tied for 11th in the FCSAA with eight points (three goals, two assists) this season.

Jasmine Mahoney powered the Polk State Volleyball offense with 10 assists while Ana Martinez led the defensive effort with 12 digs on Wednesday night in a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Florida SouthWestern State College.

A mistake-prone first half was too much for Polk State Soccer to overcome as the Eagles suffered their first home defeat of the season on Wednesday afternoon to No. 11 Eastern Florida State College, 3-0.

Polk State Volleyball drops its Citrus Conference opener at No. 5 Florida SouthWestern State College.

The Eagles fall to 0-12 and 0-1 in conference. They’ll remain on the road to face No. 2 Daytona State College on Saturday.

Polk State Soccer falls at home for the first time this season.

The Eagles drop to 4-3-1 on the season and 0-2 in FCSAA play. They’ll head to Miami to take on University of South Carolina Lancaster on Friday.

LEGENDS OF POLK’S PAST: 2007 Soccer Team

Polk State Soccer didn’t play its first match until 2003, but it didn’t take long for the program to emerge as a national power. Then the Polk State Community College Vikings, the program won a fourth straight Region 8 championship in 2007 and reached the national tournament for the first time ever.

Polk State also picked up its first win at the national NJCAA Tournament in Albany, Ga., beating Schoolcraft College, which was coached by current Polk State Head Coach Dee Shivraman, in a 3-2 thriller. Under legendary Bill Read, Polk State went just 1-2 at the national tournament but closed the year with a 20-3-1 overall record. The 20 victories remain the most in a single season in program history.

Forward Kim Newsome and goalkeeper Carol Myers were each recognized as first-team NJCAA All-Americans. Newsome was also named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team. Renee Heacock and Danielle Mayer also earned All-American honors as Polk State finished No. 6 in the final NJCAA Poll. Taylor Ocasio, Christina Mintz, Adi Alvarado, Kristin Bailey, Kisten Vollmer, Betsy Foster, Rachel Butler and Amy Maslyn were among other notables from that team.
