In 1613, a retainer named Hasekura Tsunenaga sailed out of northern Japan on a ship built for him, sent by his lord to open trade with Europe.

He crossed the Pacific to Mexico. He rode overland to the Atlantic coast, crossed that too, and landed in Spain. He was received by the King in Madrid and baptised there. Then he went on to Rome.

In November 1615 he was granted an audience with Pope Paul V and made an honorary citizen of Rome. The document is still held in Sendai today.

He got nothing. No treaty, no trade, no alliance. Spain had already worked out that Japan was closing itself off, and Rome was not going to move without Spain.

He sailed home the long way and arrived in 1620, seven years after leaving.

While he was away, Japan had banned Christianity outright. The religion he had been baptised into was now a crime, his mission was pointless, and the country he came back to had no use for any of it.

He died two years later.
