Busy Isn't the Same as Moving

“We've never been busier, so why doesn't it feel like progress?”

I hear this more than almost anything else. A team can be exhausted by six every evening and still be no closer to where the business needs to go.

Busy and moving forward are not the same thing. A hamster wheel is exhausting too, it just doesn't go anywhere.

The real question isn't “how do we work harder.” It's “what did we actually build this month?” Not what we kept running... what we built.

Here's a test I give leaders often, and it catches almost everyone out.

Can you state your vision, out loud, in one breath, in language a brand-new employee would understand?

Not a paragraph. Not a slide with six bullet points. One breath.

If it takes you several attempts, and a few “well, what I really mean is...” — that's not a failure. It just means the vision is still forming.

But it also means it isn't ready to hand to a team yet. Because if you need several tries to say it, your team will need several more to understand it. And by the time it reaches the front line, it's changed shape entirely.

Go on... try it. One breath.
