The forgotten 40…🙈

Back in March 2025, Jordan went to Donaldson Dam for his second session just after he filmed the Donnies Pursuit for our YouTube channel. Unfortunately, some technical difficulties made getting the content from this session a nightmare, and what was a milestone session for Jordan fell through the cracks.

Why was this session a milestone?
It shaped and verified the strategies that Jordan uses at Donaldson Dam till this day. Although he never expected to land a 40lber on his second session at the venue, it was his first significant fish from Donaldson that really allowed him to start building the puzzle.

You may have seen his version of the German Rig in the last few posts, this was the first fish he landed on that rig and the first time he had ever cast out that rig. Although he had never fished the rig before, he wanted something that was simple to tie, that presented bottom and wafter baits well, and that he didn’t have to worry about tangles when casting. Now he has been fishing it for well over a year and uses it for 99% of his angling.

Another vital piece to the puzzle was feature finding, or in this case he focused on contour mapping, recording the depth every 5-10m using a marker float. He started identifying the deeper areas that he wanted to target specifically in winter months, during his sessions he has found that literally 1 foot in depth has made the difference between catching and blanking.

These key points were the beginning of the puzzle that Jordan has built to having successful sessions till this day.

Two anglers… Two bars of gold…🌅

Jean and Werner returned to Roodekoppies for one last action packed session before the carp started spawning.

When we received this picture, the first thought we had was that it would be the perfect way to sum up the winter campaign. If you have fished Roodekoppies, then you will know that there are many challenges to overcome, from trying to get decent swims, to being plagued by drifting hyacinth. This venue is a beast and takes a huge amount of commitment to keep going back. They had a tough start with overwhelming numbers of small carp continuously picking up their rigs, but managed to form a plan and were rewarded with some stunning results. With this picture summing up another successful campaign as peg mates, they can both sit back and start planning the next one.

Will they choose another venue? Or will they return to the mighty Roodekoppies Dam for round 2?

We will have to wait and see…😉

Another successful park lake session. 💪🦊

With some proper carpy weather conditions on the cards this weekend, I wasn’t going to let the opportunity go to waste. I decided to target structures and key interception points that have produced for me in the past, keeping the approach simple and putting my confidence in the areas I know can produce.

With my favourite pop-up rigs deployed, it didn’t take long before the Fox MX+ alarms went into meltdown mode.

My trusted Spinner Rig consisted of a size 4 Fox Wide Gape Straight hook, coupled with 6 inches of Rigidity as the stiff section, insuring everything is perfect on the lake bed. Every carp landed had a perfect hook hold in the bottom lip, giving me complete confidence in the setup and ensuring each fish made it safely to the landing net.

What started as another session at the park lake quickly turned into a session to remember, with my girlfriend also getting stuck into the action and landing a new personal best!

Another successful session, another few lessons learned, and plenty of confidence in the gear and tactics that keep producing.

Chasing Carp…🏃🏻‍➡️🐳

Jean’s first results after deciding to adopt the nomadic approach with Werner.

Of course chasing the carp comes with its own challenges because you never know where you might find them and can lead to some challenging angling circumstances. In this case, both Jean and Werner had large w**d beds combined with hyacinth in front of them. It was key to make sure the line was high up from the rod tip for as far as possible to ensure good bite indication and try prevent the w**d from entangling with the lines.

In order to do this, Jean and Werner made use of the Black Label of bank sticks and buzz bars, making it easy and quick to set up and adjust the height of their rods.

When adopting this approach, it is important to be ready for all circumstances.
