⛰️ GOLDEN ESCARPMENT LITE — FAMILY, FUN & MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE

Golden Escarpment Lite turned out to be a proper family adventure!

Although most of the group opted out of the Mt Anderson summit, simply exploring the Hartebeesvlakte and the foothills of Mpumalanga’s second-highest peak provided more than enough excitement.

And hats off to the parents who carried their little ones up Maritzbos! 👏 Those are the kind of adventures that create memories for a lifetime — and perhaps more importantly, set the tone for a life filled with adventure.

We still absolutely love our Full 4-Peak Winter Traverse, but mid-spring brings a completely different experience. We had perfect mountain weather, as usual, and the warmer temperatures came with one very welcome bonus: mountain pools and mini waterfalls to cool off in along the way. 💦

The ultimate way to experience the Golden Escarpment is to do both:

🔥 Full Golden Escarpment Traverse — a gruelling 4-day trek over 4 peaks, with a new twist coming in 2027.

🌿 Golden Escarpment Lite — the mid-spring version, allowing you to experience the same incredible landscape at a more leisurely pace, with time to enjoy the pools, waterfalls and scenery.

What do you get when you mix two energised Border Collies, a strong-willed 4-year-old, an umbrella hat, a wrong turn, and a hill that requires some serious scrambling?

Chaos. And a LOT of fun! 😂

Who needs tequila anyway?

This was how we spent Heritage Day — scrambling up hills, taking questionable turns, keeping up with the dogs, and generally embracing the kind of adventure that definitely wasn’t in the original plan.

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that go slightly sideways. 🏔️🐕🍃

Spring in the deep Makhonjwas

Deep in the mountains near Shiyalongubo, spring is in full swing.

The veld is waking up, colour is creeping back into the landscape, and every hike brings something new into view. Tiny flowers tucked between rocks, flowering shrubs, fresh green growth and the unmistakable signs that winter has finally loosened its grip.

This is one of the joys of exploring the Makhonjwas — you never quite know what you'll find around the next bend.

🌿 Lufafa Wilderness Hike

This is indeed the wild soul of the Makhonjwas.

Perfect weather. A campsite with a spectacular view. Vast, open and largely unexplored tracts of wilderness. And encounters with friendly cattle herders whose endurance would put many ultra-runners to shame.

This was Lufafa.

Some hikes you plan. Others feel as though they were meant to happen.

The powers that be smiled upon us this weekend — the weather played along, the mountains opened up, and for a little while, it felt like we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

Remote. Wild. Beautiful. Unforgettable.
