Masandawana embarked on a global scale aided by their champions of Africa tag and came boosting a run of four wins from their last five matches, while the Saudi Arabian giants Al-Ahli entered having won just one of their last three matches in all competitions.

Sundowns endured a slow start but settled quickest and grabbed the lead in the 17th minute when Nuno Santos made a late run in the box and nodded in from Teboho Mokoena's cross.

The lead was short-lived as the kings of Asia responded exactly a minute later after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams bundled a goal-bound shot from Firas Al-Buraikan over the goal-line to level it up in Tshwane.

Masandawana were close to going behind for the first time in the match moments thereafter through a curling shot by Francisco Trincao following a through pass by Ivan Toney, but the Portuguese went sent his effort wide of the mark.

New signing Thabang Matuludi looked for a dream debut five minutes to halftime with a low rasping shot outside the area after getting on the end of a loose ball, but Edouard Mendy got down and parried.

Second Half:

Masandawana made a substitution five minutes after the break with Grant Kekana limped off the ground following a strong challenge and had Malibongwe Khoza come on as his replacement.

The African champions remained on the ascendancy a little in the midway stage of the second half and grabbed a golden chance to go back in front with a point-blank effort by Khulumani Ndamane from a free-kick by Aubrey Modiba, but the effort went over.

Ahli succumbed to the wave of pressure and eventually regained the lead when a superb cross from the right by Matuludi picked out Santos to head in the bottom-corner and sealed a brace.

It became a one-way traffic as the Brazilians remained in control and looked to add a third with a first-time shot from a tight angle by substitute Bathusi Aubaas, but he was denied by Mendy.

The big-spending Saudi club probed the equaliser in a tense closing spell, but the Brazilians didn’t lose their shape and survived the pressure to advance to the Challenger Cup.

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa has reflected on Amakhosi’s recent dip in form ahead of their Betway Premiership clash against Golden Arrows on Sunday afternoon.

The Glamour Boys will battle it out against the Pitso Dladla-led side at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.

The fixture was initially scheduled to take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 19 September. However, after exploring all available options, Abafana Bes’thende were unable to secure a suitable alternative venue in Durban due to circumstances beyond the club’s control, leading to the venue change.

While Chiefs remain undefeated in the league this season, they have drawn three of their last four matches after kicking off the campaign with back-to-back victories.

The Fernando da Cruz’s side currently sits fourth on the Betway Premiership standings with 12 points from six matches, five points ahead of seventh-placed Arrows.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mtasingwa expressed confidence in their tactical approach despite recent dropped points.

“Our game model is well structured. It’s just that we have been unlucky with results,” Mtasingwa said. “We have a good spirit in the camp. We have had a full week to get ready, and we are feeling positive about the game this weekend.”

The midfielder emphasised the significance of securing maximum points ahead of the upcoming FIFA international break.

“It is massively important to us as a team, considering our recent results. We always focus on the next game and are looking forward to it because we really want to boost our momentum with a win ahead of the FIFA international break that follows,” he added.

Playing in Mbombela rather than Durban effectively hands Chiefs a home-away-from-home advantage, as the Soweto giants traditionally command massive crowds in Mpumalanga—a factor Mtasingwa believes could work in their favour.

“The venue can count in our favour because we always have a lot of our fans that turn out to support us, for which we are very grateful. Their support is a big motivator for us because we want to make them proud and happy,” he concluded.

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has explained why he is not convinced his former team can mount a serious challenge for the Betway Premiership title, insisting it’s a two-horse race between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Currently sitting fourth on the table, Amakhosi have yet to taste defeat in the league, but their campaign has been inconsistent, with three draws in their six games. The share of the spoils amounts to six points dropped, leaving them with eight points fewer than leaders Sundowns, who have, however, played two more games.

Second-placed Pirates have four points more than Chiefs, with the Soweto giants having played the same number of games. It is a season in which Amakhosi are pushing for their first league title since the 2014/15 season.

But Sundowns have shown serious intent to reclaim the Betway Premiership after failing to win a single domestic trophy last season, in which they bagged the CAF Champions League crown. On the other side, Pirates are the league defending champions and are firmly on course for a second successive campaign.

In an interview with FARPost, the veteran coach looks at Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz’s team selection, adaptation to South African football and the costly mistakes Amakhosi have been making.

“When you look at it now, it’s a two-horse race. I think it’s six games now. It’s Sundowns and Pirates,” Johnson told FARPost.

“There are a lot of things you have to take into consideration now, but I say it’s Sundowns and Pirates, and then, of course, AmaZulu FC, who look steady at the beginning of the season. It’s very difficult [for Chiefs] because they change their line-up quite often. He [Da Cruz] changes one or two players; sometimes he changes three players.

“It’s a very difficult scenario because he is also new to South African football. So, he has to learn, and you know we have 11 different cultures, and he comes from one culture.

“He worked in Morocco; we all understand football, and football is the same all over the world. It’s played XI vs XI, and it is about the quality of players you have on the pitch. But besides the quality we have on the pitch, we also have different dimensions and hierarchy on the pitch.

The culture dynamics are something the former Chiefs coach insists on when assessing Da Cruz’s bid to steer Chiefs to Betway Premiership success.

“If you know the Zulu culture, then it’s a different culture. Then the Xhosa culture is a different one. Then you have the players who I call the coloured players, who are the black players from Cape Town and coloured players from Johannesburg,” explained Johnson, who has previously coached AmaZulu FC.

“Those are different dynamics that you, as a coach, have to understand. How have they [Chiefs] been playing now? Yes, they made some very big errors in games that they should have won.

“They have had some good scoring opportunities in games that they have been good in certain moments of the match. But then, as we all have seen, it’s the big mistakes that they have been making in different departments.”

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has pointed to Relebohile Mofokeng as an example of the ambition he wants to see from his players after the youngster's impressive start to life in Europe.

The Bafana Bafana attacker has wasted little time making his mark abroad, scoring his fourth goal for Union SG in Thursday's 3-0 UEFA Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

Ouaddou, who worked with Mofokeng at Pirates, believes the 21-year-old's approach is the kind of mentality his current squad should follow.

Ouaddou: 'This boy was very ambitious'

"Yeah, Orlando Pirates is building stories since many, many years now, since decades and credit has to be given to the club," Ouaddou told SuperSport TV.

"But, coming back to Relebohile Mofokeng, when I am a bit hard with my players, it's the example that we have to follow, if we are ambitious and this boy was very ambitious.

"All what he was doing last season in our team, it was all the time forward, so I'm happy for him, I hope he's going to continue.

"It's very good for the club as well in Europe, it gives a very good image for the brand of Orlando Pirates in Europe."

Mofokeng's move came after several seasons with Pirates, where he developed into one of the club's key attacking players before making the next step in his career.

For Ouaddou, however, Mofokeng's European progress also serves as a reminder of the standards he wants from the players who remain at the Soweto giants.

Former Orlando Pirates defender Kamal Sait is of the opinion that the club's new teenage sensation Edmilson Chaney has what it takes to become a household name at the Soweto giants.

Sait, who featured for Bucs between 1998 and 2002, says he was pleasantly surprised when Chaney was snapped up by the club following Hope FC's promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship in June.

"Firstly, I want to say that this should also be an indication and reminder to all young players from the lower leagues in Cape Town that you must always perform at your very best as you never know who is watching," stated Sait, in conversation with KickOff.

"To think Chaney was spotted in the Second Division, that should be a reminder not to take any football exercise or match for granted.

Edmilson is obviously a special player, but there's a long road ahead of him. In my view, he has what it takes: the skill, pace combined with football intelligence, which will further increase as he develops. He could become a crowd favourite.

The 54-year-old has also sounded a word of warning.

"Many of us back then failed as we fell into the trap of earning a little bit more money than what you are used to and can manage. Suddenly, your lifestyle changes. There was no financial advice or guidance for us, so, yeah, I made our mistakes.

"Look, at the end of the day, you are there to do a job and that is what he must tell himself and do it to the best of his ability.

"Look at some of the young talented players [from Cape Town] currently with [Mamelodi] Sundowns, and chances are they are going to make it to the top. You can also look at how good Tashreeq [Matthews] is doing at the club. You also don't hear any negatives about Iqraam Rayners. These players respect and know what their jobs and professions are worth.

"So, when you play for those teams you are very much in the spotlight. Anytime you put your foot out of line, someone will know about it.

"We also don't want to discourage our players from going. No, they must go and experience life up north when the opportunity comes," said Sait, who heads up the Maties Academy's female team in addition to being Coaching Facilitator for SAFA and CAF.

Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Thapelo Morena says they need to leave their mark as African champions, ahead of their do-or-die FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup encounter against Al Ahli Saudi.

Sundowns are entering the FIFA Intercontinental Cup tournament in the second round after the back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite (Asia) champions knocked out Auckland FC in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup play-offs.

Speaking to Journalists ahead of the match on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Morena says they are honoured to participate in the tournament and are hopeful their experience in international tournaments such as the FIFA Club World Cup will hold them in good stead.

"We are honoured to be part of it. To be honest it's one of the biggest stages in football, every player would like to play (in it) and as a team also we're looking forward to this game and definitely we want to deliver a good performance on the pitch," Morena said at their training pitch at Chloorkop.

"The experience we got also from the Club World Cup is one of the best, it's also playing a big role in the team, most of the players are still there, there's only a few players who came (recently) but they understand the atmosphere and the culture of the team,

"So it's going to be easier for us to be on the pitch and try to absorb pressure and do what we do best on the field," the 33-year-old said.

The Bafana Bafana defender-cum-winger, also suggested that playing this international match in front of their home supporters motivates them to leave their mark as African champions.

"It's an advantage for us and it gives us comfort and also being around our supporters singing for us. It's one of the things (that's motivating us). We need to leave a mark that we're African champions," Morena added.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende, who is in the final year of his contract, insists the uncertainty around his future will not affect his commitment to the club.

Allende was speaking ahead of Sundowns’ FIFA Intercontinental Cup encounter against Saudi Pro League giants Al Ahli at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.

The highly anticipated encounter pits the champions of Africa against the champions of Asia, with Sundowns looking to make their mark on the global stage.

The Chile international is in his fifth season with the Brazilians after joining them from Uruguayan outfit Montevideo City Torque in July 2022. For Allende, the immediate priority remains helping Sundowns succeed, even as questions about whether this could be his final season at Chloorkop continue to mount.

The talented midfielder initially signed a three-year contract with a further two-year option, tying him to the reigning African champions until June 2027.

With no indication yet that a new deal has been agreed, the 27-year-old could be approaching the final months of an impressive spell in Tshwane. However, Allende says he will continue to conduct himself professionally and give his best until the end of his contract, regardless of what his future holds.

“I think I’m very professional… I have my last year here [at Sundowns] for now, and I always try to do my best until the final. As a player I will always do my best in what I do in the future, now in the present, and my family gave me this idea, and I will always respect it,” Allende told journalists.

His latest remarks echo comments he made a few months ago when he revealed that no discussions had taken place over a potential extension. At the time, Allende said he was focused on doing his job and supporting his teammates, whether selected to play or not.

The midfielder has been one of Sundowns’ most consistent performers since arriving in South Africa, averaging approximately 44 appearances per season across all competitions.

His tactical intelligence and ability to operate in different midfield roles have made him an important squad member.
However, retaining him beyond the current season could prove challenging. His representatives are expected to explore opportunities in Major League Soccer and in Mexico should he become available.

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has reacted to Lebone Seema’s maiden Bafana Bafana call-up following the defender’s stellar performances for the Buccaneers.

Seema was included in Pitso Mosimane’s final squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea on 26 and 30 September. Bafana will also face Egypt in the international friendly as the veteran coach looks to sharpen his tactics.

Mosimane announced his final squad on Thursday at SAFA House, with Seema among a few new faces in the national senior men’s team.

The talented centre-back has been a consistent performer in the PSL, having joined Pirates ahead of last season from TS Galaxy. Seema made an immediate impact at Pirates, playing a key role in helping the club win the MTN8, Carling Knockout, and Betway Premiership titles in the 2025/26 season.

After an impressive first season with Pirates, Seema scooped the Defender of the Season accolade at the 2026 PSL awards after making 37 appearances across all competitions. He also scored two goals.

The 23-year-old picked up where he left off, delivering solid performances even in the current campaign. He has featured in 11 matches in all competitions thus far, netting two goals and providing two assists.

After helping Pirates claim a 2-0 victory over Durban City FC on Wednesday night in Soweto, Ouaddou praised Seema’s impact and said the defender deserves his recent Bafana recognition.

“Firstly, I want to congratulate him [Seema] and other members of the team who have been called to the national team,” Ouaddou said.

“I thank Pitso as well for calling him. It means he has been following his work from last season. He’s the future of South African football. We have so much talent in that position [centre-back], and I hope this call-up will give him confidence to continue to work and grow.

“But I’m not surprised; he’s somebody who is good mentally, professional, and coachable. It’s very important for me because to improve, you need to be coachable and be able to understand and listen.

“He’s starting to know me now because I can be hard. Last season I was really hard with him, but it’s for his good and his performance. We work a lot on the quality of his passes, short passes and long passes.

“So we are really happy, and our technical staff and the club are very happy about this call-up. I hope he’s going to continue and bring us this experience from the national team.”

Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate Darrel Matsheke has made a promise to the Stellenbosch FC faithful after completing a return to the Cape Winelands side for a second spell.

Stellies officially announced the signing of the 27-year-old defensive midfielder on Friday, 18 September.

As previously reported by FARPost, Matsheke has put pen to paper on a short-term contract with the Gavin Hunt-led outfit. The midfielder passed his medical on Thursday before linking up with his new teammates in training.

Matsheke previously donned the Maroon jersey during the 2023/24 campaign. He played a pivotal role in the club’s historic Carling Knockout triumph, scoring the winning spot-kick in the final against TS Galaxy to lift the silverware.

During his first stint with the Cape club, he made 12 appearances across all competitions before brief spells with the now-defunct Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria Callies and Kruger United.

Speaking to the club’s media department following his unveiling, Matsheke expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to rejoin the side.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC. It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here,” said Matsheke. “I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back.”

The midfielder insists he has a point to prove and aims to help the club build on their recent achievements.

“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete… I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa [CAF Confederation Cup] last time,” he added.

“So, there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

Matsheke has been handed the number 31 jersey for the current campaign. He could make his first appearance of the campaign when Stellenbosch clash with Kruger United in the Betway Premiership this weekend.
