Our new Stone Owl Cottage website is officially live.

Stone Owl Cottage has always been more than a place to stay.

Tucked away in the misty mountain village of Kaapsehoop, it was created as a little cocoon from the world. A place to slow down, curl up beside the fire, wander through the forest, watch for wild horses and remember the pleasure of having nowhere you urgently need to be.

Our new website gives you a glimpse inside the cottage, the beautiful surroundings and some of the small details that make this place so special to us.

One of the things that makes Stone Owl Cottage unique is that much of the artwork you'll find throughout the cottage was created by me.

Art has always been one of the ways I make sense of being human.

Many of the pieces are symbolic. They explore themes of belonging, hope, resilience, transformation, and our connection with nature. Some reflect my own experiences. Others invite you to discover your own meaning within them.

I love the idea that a painting or sculpture can quietly begin a conversation, asking a question that words sometimes cannot.

My hope is that, as you wander through the cottage, you'll find more than a place to stay. You'll discover a space where creativity, nature, and story come together.

One of Kaapsehoop's hidden treasures is Battery Creek Falls, a beautiful waterfall tucked away in a forested gorge just outside the village.

You don't hear the waterfall immediately.

At first, you simply walk through the forest.

Then, almost imperceptibly, the sound begins to emerge.

Long before you see the water, you know it is there.

It reminds me that some of life's most meaningful places don't announce themselves. They reveal themselves gradually to those willing to keep walking.

Perhaps that is true of life as well.

Peace, belonging, and joy are rarely found in a single dramatic moment. More often, they reveal themselves one step at a time, as we slow down, stay present, and trust the path beneath our feet.

Handcrafted from rich timber and sculpted steel, it winds gracefully to the loft through an intricate network of branches, creating the feeling of climbing into the canopy of a tree.

Yesterday, I sat at the table at Stone Owl Cottage, looking at an unfinished owl.
The outline was there.
The colours had been chosen, at least in part.
A direction existed… yet I did not know what to do next.
The whole piece felt too big.
So I paused.
And I asked myself a simple question:
What do I know right now?
I knew I wanted to outline the owl’s eyes in black.
That was enough.
So I started there.
When I finished, I asked again:
What do I know now?
And I followed that.
Again and again.

Creating this owl reminded me of the way life moves.
We often wait for clarity.
For the full picture.
For certainty before we begin.
Yet life, like art, rarely unfolds that way.
It asks for presence.
For attention.
For the willingness to take the next honest step, even when the rest is unclear.
At Stone Owl Cottage, this rhythm becomes easier to feel.
You slow down.
You look again.
You begin to notice what is here, rather than what is missing.

The Waterfall

There is a moment, just before the river becomes a waterfall, where everything changes.

The current quickens.

The familiar path disappears.

For a moment, it is no longer held by the riverbed.
Suspended.

If a drop could think, it might believe it is falling apart.
That it has lost the river.
